G-Sync

Bakisha

I have an AOC monitor that's actually FreeSync, but it supports G-Sync. I've enabled the G-Sync option in "Nvidia Control Panel". I did some research on the Internet, and I've come across... let's say "mixed thoughts". The "Vertical Sync" option in the Nvidia Control Panel is what confuses me. If I want to use my G-Sync, should I disable, enable or keep the default option on.

Use "Fast" "on".

 

Gsync itself does not completely eliminate tearing. If you don't notice any, then you can leave vsync off. I always use Fast "on" because I hate tearing and it's just easier to leave it on, and fast "on" introduces the least latency of all the options.

 

To compensate for any added latency, you can use the low latency mode set to "Ultra". And always set "prefer max performance" for each game.

 

Those are the settings I use.

 

Edit:

Forgot about the FPS limiter. 4-6% below your max refresh rate is a good range.

You need to limit the refresh rate in the NVIDIA Control Panel by about 4 to 6FPS below your maximum refresh rate. 

 

Disable VSync in NVIDIA Control Panel (or use 3D settings) 

 

Enable VSync in game

 

GSync without VSync will sometimes have tearing near the bottom of the screen. 

Gaving FPS limit with VSync ensures a tearingless experience wuth no additional input lag from VSync as you would normally get. 

 

EDIT

 

Using fast is actually worse because it increases the input lag. 

 

Fast is good for monitors with no adaptive refresh rate as an alternative for VSync alone.

I don't remember where exactly but some time ago i read that you should use "enabled" to have G-Sync working as intended.

 

Other than that i have the same settings as you plus the FPS limiter @WereCat mentioned.

 

And with this i never noticed any tearing or increased input lag whatsoever.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

My monitor has 144hz. How do I put it at 140hz exactly? 

 

Edit: I've figured it out. Though... Decreasing it by either 4 or 6 FPS. Is that really necessary? Like.. It feels so weird not seeing exactly 144hz after so long lmao.

Doing so will objectively improve the experience. 4 v 6 won't really matter.

Hey are you reducing the refresh rate to 140Hz? You should not do that.

 

You should be setting a framerate limit at ~140fps.

Try hards will say to use riva tuner. The Nvidia Control Panel is fine, though.

@HairlessMonkeyBoyLast question, I promise. Should I enable the "low latency mode" option in Nvidia Control Panel? Does it do anything besides making tearing unlikely? (Like lower the resolution in games, or making the graphics a bit worse, etc..)

It does nothing about tearing. It limits the prerendered frames depending on the setting used. It may reduce your frame rate a bit in exchange for better latency. Some games don't play nice with it, but I have not encountered any.

 

Set it to ultra.

Ah... I see.. Thank you so much! I've never really messed with these settings, so I'm pretty much an old timer when it comes to the Nvidia Control Panel.
