3800X Idling at ~60ºC

Callidem

I have had a 3800X for 5 months now with a wraith prism cooler and I noticed it idles at 60ºC, should I be worried? I've been thinking about getting an AIO

Idle temps mean nothing other than the temp / fan noise balance you decide to choose.

Your fan speed is pretty low

You can increase the noise/fan profile to make it cooler, but i doubt it do much since this was idle and, well, you do nothing at idle

Your case airflow could also be a factor

Don't be worried unless it sits in the upper 80c's for long periods of time on load or exceeds 90c

But that cooler def is not the best, you could spend relatively little to substantially lower temps.

Also, AIO's aren't always the answer, I had a Kraken X73 that was almost letting my 5950x reach 90c

A Noctua DH-15 lowered temps in the same case with the same case fans.

if u had a Noctua DH15 beat a kraken x73, thats what we call user error

the kraken was installed by a NZXT BLD, it was installed correctly, the thermal paste covered the entire chip

user error from a prebuild never happens! 😮  oh wait 😛
how was it installed?

its impossible for a 360 to lose to an aircooler

It was installed on the top exhaust, top exhausting, all 3 fans worked and where plugged into nzxt's case controller, which worked with nzxt cam.

Pump was relatively quiet until the cpu hit 80c+ and then it was noticeable.

I have seen charts where the noctua dh15 beats most AIO's so idk about that.

The exhaust part might have something to do with it but, even 240 AIOS beats DH15

The water in the aio never got hot, but the fans would spin up to 100% often.

Shrug, it was my first experience with a AIO, and it was so poor I went back to noctua.

feelsbadman, smells like poor contact with cpu + not optimal placement of rads/fans.

water in AIOs at 40c is not uncommon. so if ur water was like 26c or something, that smells like bad contact

Perhaps, but the thermal paste was spread out all the way on both the aio's contact and the cpu, so it would be odd if that was not enough contact, as far as I remember 3 of the 4 screws where really tight one was relatively loose.

I saw 10c drops in cpu temps instantly with the noctua though.

1 loose screw = could be rly bad for temps. don't remember who tested this, but u just explained why it performed bad. no doubt about that

Some of you guys are putting way too much faith into an AIO.
