Bought a LG 34GN850-B. Blurring when i move things around. Plus help setting up.

HerstalP90

Hello everyone, I've had this monitor for... well a few hours now. I've been trying to set up the colours. But its been a pain to be honest. Gamer 1 seems very dark and warm. Gamer 2 seems better, a bit more cool. But it makes colours washed out.
Also i used the Display port cable that came with the monitor. But the "displayport version" option in general options is greyed out. So i can't do anything with that. So i can't see if its Displayport 1.4. Everyone says to use gamer 1. But it makes the white of this forum seem almost pinkish in colour. In gamer 2 its more white. But it turns grey/blueish in colour. Adaptive-sync is blurred out. I can't change the black level.
I have no clue what settings to use. And there are a lot of settings to go through. This is my first IPS monitor. My monitor before this one was a VA. But that one was dying. And this is also my first ultrawide.

If any of you have any info for me. Or know a youtube video, forum post, review. I'd greatly appreciate it.

I don't know about that specific model, but in my experience to best preset to use is always the "user" or "default". Any "RPG" or "RTS" or "FPS" or "Gamer" preset will change the content to something other than the creator intended, and worse can introduce black crush and other unpleasantries.

I always use this site when setting up a new display:

I'd trust their settings over anyone else's.

The default is Gamer 1. But it just looks off to me.

But also my main issue is the side to side blur. Its incredibly noticable in even movies and youtube. When characters walk from either side to the other. I can't even see their features anymore. They just become a blurry mess. Its actually horrible looking.

RTINGS reduced both Red and green relative to blue in their calibration. When uncalibrated, they used the sRBG mode.

It would be worse in movies and TV since they use 24-30 fps. Youtube would depend on the channel. Some do 60 FPS, and some don't.

Are you sure you have the monitor running in it's max refresh rate? Do you have any amount of overdrive enabled?

Check out the UFO test. It'll tell you what your refresh rate is set to, and it'll show you what your blur is like with high FPS content.

Running at 160HZ. Which is the overdrive. The ufo looks the same at 144 with overdrive disabled.
In the UFO test the UFO just looks blurred. The white dots seem like a line. His eyes too. On my old monitor i could very clearly see the UFO. I could still make out the tiny dots etc. On this one its impossible.

Due to the filter nano IPS (LG's filter) or QLED (filter from samsung).

They will have a lot of strong colors that might not seem right in sRGB, also this monitor is one of the worst IPS when it comes to the black to white contrast, unlike VA that you might be used to. But it's one of the better ones for HZ in it's overdrive mode (making the fps and HZ work for a good image), but it's not the top HZ monitors. Although it doesn't have the more newer features like strobe effect for clearer image (ELMB?), but it's not great for everyone.

Not sure why yours doesn't work, maybe the driver or cable or a setting just doesn't play along nicely?

Another thing is that the 1440p can make some text or other things that are not run in native 1440p to look blurry.

Since the common resolutions don't scale nicely to 1440p.

Also this monitor has a low brightness (300-400 nits) but it's decent .

(might be that I think about the 27" flat version, not yours, if they are that different)

Yea i really don't understand what is happening. If it persists through the weekend and i can't find a fix for it then i'll probably have to return it. Because the blurring is driving me insane. It isn't ghosting. When things move too fast it just... blurs. Words jumble together and become a shape. There is no trailing or anything like that. I honestly don't understand what is happening and thats whats messing me up most. I can fix most things. But when i can't even find a single person on the internet that has the same issue as me. Or none reported, well i have no clue where to even look.

I bought a display port 1.4 cable. As sort of a last ditch effort to see if maybe with some miracle that will do something. (it probably wont (it arrives on sunday))
Other than that, this was a monitor that i've wanted for ages. Saved up for, for a long time. So this just makes me sad.
Guess i'll have to wait till IPS gets better. And go back to a VA panel monitor. I wouldn't know which one tho. So i'll have to go back into the rabbit hole of looking for a monitor if this doesn't work out.

Overdrive is not overclock. LG may call it something different. My MSI monitor calls it "Response Time" and I have options for "Normal" "Fast" and "Fastest". Look for an option like that.

This would be a good VA alternative to the 34GN850-B:

https://www.newegg.com/black-red-msi-optix-mpg-artymis-343cqr-34/p/N82E16824475102

And this is a less curvy version of the 343CQR if you aren't into that:

There is also this which is a newer cheaper version of the 34GN850-B.

if it was overclocking that you talked about, then that could cause visual issues?

But I guess its like that in all the time anyways?

Then it might be better to be able to return it.

VA do have a lot of their own issues, more so for fast games.

Depends on what you use it for, or if you will prefer it. Might be different from older VA's, due to pushing the VA even more with higher HZ and all that, as it has even worse smearing effect in motion. (might be some good VA's out there without this).

Also some newer IPS tech that could help in future IPS panels. (Mini-LED etc)

On my LG monitor it's called "Response Time", with the settings off, slow, normal and fast. Located in Picture --> Game adjust --> Response Time

From my understanding, normal is what some other brands would have as fast and fast is what other brands/monitors would have as fastest.

On my monitor I find normal the best because fast I see overshoot and kind of feel more blurry again.

It's a different LG monitor than OP tho.

Also another thing i haven't thought of. HDR is on. Should i use HDR? When i turned it off it seemed like my brightness got turned all the way down but it was on 100%.
I've heard there aren't any benefits to it especially with HDR 400. So will i only get negatives with it on?

Also another thing i haven't thought of. HDR is on. Should i use HDR? When i turned it off it seemed like my brightness got turned all the way down but it was on 100%.
I've heard there aren't any benefits to it especially with HDR 400. So will i only get negatives with it on?

depends, not sure about the brightness level of the 34 one, but on the 27 is decent.

HDR is not good with those in general use, but in certain games it CAN be very good. But sometimes they will lack a lot to make the details in HDR mode, and better without. That is mostly by a game to game basis, something mini-led and OLED (v2 for added brightness levels?) would do a better HDR experience?

Every time i turn HDR off, it turns itself back on again. Which is pretty damn frustrating since i can't test stuff out this way.

in games? (might be an HDR setting to deal with)

else right click on your desktop (windows 10) go to screen settings and select windows HD colors, disable HDR.
