the graphics card one?

if thats what you mean how am i supposed to tell if it works on it if i dont have a video output

Just return the 980 then and get a sata ssd then. Cheaper and just as fast here. That adapter is probably your issue, but when get a nvme drive for this use case.

I just purchased a 980 pro as part of me slowly upgrading my system my motherboard does not have an m.2 slot so I got a pci e 1x adapter a blue light comes on for the adapter when plugged in but no new storage device appears not in disk management or documents or even the bios any ideas?

Samsung software tools have an NVME driver but it does not support the 980 pro is this a situation where I will have to wait for till I buy a new mother board as the current one is a a320 or is it the ssd fault or drivers not supporting it?

Return the Pro, buy a SATA SSD and you won't know the difference.  Or do you do heavy video editing?

Either buy a motherboard that has a compatible M.2 Nvme slot or return the 980 pro for a standard sata SSD. It's really one or the other. An M.2 Sata SSD should work in that adapter, however it does need to be in a x16 or x8 pcie slot not a x1 or x4.  If you're just gaming or using it for storage, it's not going to make even the slightest difference in speeds. Unless you have a motherboard that has a PCIE Gen 4 M.2 slot getting a drive such as the 980 Pro is absolutely pointless. Getting an M.2 drive in a computer that doesn't even have M.2 support at all is even more so.

I've had an NVMe SSD (The SN750) on my old Intel C600 chipset motherboard with a Xeon E5-1650 (first generation) CPU with a Sabrent NVMe to PCIe 16x adapter and it worked fine. Typically whether or not Windows recognizes it is down to the motherboard's support for PCIe storage, which you can actually check if your motherboard's BIOS allows you to see what devices you have connected. I don't see why this wouldn't be working. Also for all of you saying that a SATA SSD would be just as fast in this implementation, it's not??? Like I was able to get much faster speeds, maybe not full potential but still close to 85-90% performance, out of a Gen 3 PCIe slot on a motherboard from 2012?

My profile picure is real. That's what I look like in real life. I'm actually a blue and white African Wild Dog.

Wel speed wise, it might actually be slower than sata, as op is using a pcie gen 2 x1 slot, capable of about 500mB/s max. It should still show up in the os, but I think the adapter is the issue here.

PCIe 3.0 X16 vs PCIe 2.0 X1 is no comparison. Your SSD will no doubt get mad bandwidth.

Also this appears to be a gaming computer for the most part so a high end super fast NVMe SSD is superfluous either way.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.
