I am in the process of preparing to update my main rig to windows 10. in preparation for this i was going to use my old ivy bridge based laptop as a test bed to try everything on before doing anything to my 3770k main rig. of course as per usual i ran into a problem. my laptop is on windows 10 version 1903 and keeps running into problems trying to update to version 20h1. with this setback in mind i am even more concerned about the entire idea than i already was.

so my questions to you today are why will my laptop not update to the later versions when every source i can find states the ivybridge family is fully supported?

will this same limited upgrade path happen to me when i do a fresh install onto my boot ssd? (i made the usb bootable media less than 2 months ago)

This isn't a CPU issue. Honestly i'm not entirely sure how you got to that conclusion.

Anyway, your Windows Update is corrupted and there are numerous ways to go about fixing it and you can get pretty deep into the weeds that may or may not be in your comfort zone.

Ultimately, a wipe and reinstall will end up being significantly faster and much less frustrating. I usually tend to just do this as i'm back up and running in under an hour with zero headache.

I've been through this, on and off for a few weeks awhile back trying different things as there are many results when you google "windows update repair" and some have some basic procedures and some are much more in depth. Eventually I had luck with a 3rd party tool, oddly enough. This one specifically (there are a few) https://www.wureset.com/

If you'd like to try and fix this manually, i'll link to where you can get started but the real tip is to just Google "windows update repair" then start going through all the articles. Some will all have the same information but some will have steps you haven't tried yet.

This is just an example of one of the many, many articles outlining steps you can take but again, I urge you to google "windows update repair" if you really want to go down that route.

The tool I also linked above can save a lot of time and that's what actually ended up working for me.

Good luck.

When you run the in place upgrade from https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10 ,  What does it give as an error message on why the update failed?  The upgrade failures I have seen from 1909 to 20h1 is it usually due to a bios not supporting UEFI or secure boot.

Yeah guesses and assumptions regardless of experience isn't scientific method or anything and the keystone of diagnostics
