My budget is around 3000 USD (USA)

I want to upgrade my current build, currently using a pre-built HP Pavilion that I had originally upgraded with a GTX 1660 Super.

I wanted to go all out on a whole new build for my self, first time I will be building for my self and not for a client.

I wanted to use the following.

Link to MicroCenter Build: https://www.microcenter.com/site/content/custom-pc-builder.aspx?load=e1b2599a-c71b-4de4-8eea-42a578ae10fe

-Ryzen 9 5900X Vermeer 3.7GHz 12-Core AM4 Boxed Processor

-X570 ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero AMD AM4 ATX Motherboard

-Trident Z Neo Series RGB 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3600 PC4-28800 CL16 Dual Channel Memory Kit F4-3600C16D-32GTZNC - Black

-MasterFrame 700 Custom Test Bench Open-Air eATX Computer Case

-SuperNOVA 850 GA 850 Watt 80 Plus Gold ATX Fully Modular Power Supply

-EVGA NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti FTW3 Ultra Gaming Triple-Fan 12GB GDDR6X PCIe 4.0 Graphics Card

-Samsung 980 Pro SSD 1TB (MZ-V8P1T0B) - M.2 NVMe Interface PCIe Gen 4x4 Internal Solid State Drive with V-NAND 3 bit MLC Technology

-ASUS ROG Strix LC 360mm RGB Water Cooling Kit

-Corsair QL120 RGB Hydraulic Bearing 120mm Case Fan - 3 Pack

I want to use it as my main workstation, but also gaming. Haven't really gamed in a few years and really want to get back into it. Would love be able to game without any issues. I mostly do Managed IT during the day, run a couple of servers and such. But also want to have some fun and make it look nice, as it's the first build I'm doing for my self.

Never did water cooling before, so I was thinking of the pre-built all in one water cooling, but I don't any issues with learning custom water cooling, especially with soft piping. Don't know if I can do hard piping.

Would love any input, advise, or any changes to the build as long as the budgets stays around the same.

Looking to buy as soon as possible, already back ordered a the rtx 3080 ti. But don't know when I'll get it. Was thinking of just using my GTX 1660 until I can get a rtx 3080.

Thanks!

The 3080ti turned out to be a bit of a waste money wise, but in this market you get what you can get for a decent price.  Maybe buy the video card first according to what you can get at a decent price and then build the rest of the machine around the capacity of the card, whatever it turns out to be.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.

Good build overall but air cooling is cheaper than water and sometimes performs better than water unless its a custom loop.

Nh d15 and dark rock pro 4 are really good high end air coolers and for a more budget option or you dont have space to fit a massive air cooler a scythe fuma 2 is also a good choice, only way an aio will beat air cooling is when you buy a massive aio like a 420 or 480mm aio, so only reason to go aio is to save space on the cpu socket and maybe make it look good.

And a 980 pro is really expensive, if you want samsung then go for a 970 instead, btw good choice of ssd manufacturer.

Otherwise great build

Thanks! Will def look into it. Was going to use the Cooler Master MasterFrame 700, as its a open frame case, I thought water cooling would be best.

Get a cheaper mobo like the X570 tomahawk or the B550 Tomahawk and put a 5950x instead.

geometry is hard
b550 > x570

I'd suggest a better psu. The Seasonic Focus GX-850 or RMX 850W would be good choices.

Have only used evga in the past. You'd recommend the GX-850 over that one? Do you think I should also increase the watt to 1000 or 1200? as currently i hit around 520.

High end EVGA units are pretty.. meh. And the GA isn’t even considered high end. It’s a decent unit for mid tier systems, but I wouldn’t go higher than that.

I would say even a 360 has a larger envelope than big air.  There are 240s and 280s that can.  They often don’t though.  Air can work for all but the very very hottest chips though. Workstation stuff not often used.  All the ryzen3 stuff is fine with air.  Even a 5950 is only pushing it. You would want to go big for a 5900.  The issue with those is getting ahold of one.  They were apparently a paper launch in North America.  They can occasionally be found in Asia but they’re quite hard to get.  5950s can be had- for $300 over original list.  This is why a lot of 5800s are being sold which was a chip originally panned because it was considered a bit expensive for what it was.  8 cores is quite sufficient for gaming though.  I’ve heard of 5 pipe noctuas being used for 5800s (big air is generally 6 pipe) there are some really lousy 6 pipe coolers though.  It seems that aluminum pipes are often bad. Strictly speaking they wouldn’t have to be, but the people doing crap pipes like to use aluminum.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Yes, definitely better than the GA.

850W should be more than enough for a 5900X and RTX 3080 Ti. Evga recommends at least 750W for the gpu.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

So I was going to use the ASUS ROG Strix LC 360mm RGB Water Cooling Kit for cooling. and the Ryzen 5900X. I ordered the Ryzen from a distributor, so i should hopefully get it in the next 2 weeks for so.
