Newbie's New Build Help

Budget (including currency): No more then $1,000.00 US Dollars

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: No gaming, Watch movies, Libra Office, Etc

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

I have monitor, Wireless KB/Mouse, Speakers, 120GB SSD drive with Windows 10 on it.  I'm upgrading from a 2015 AMD build (I did myself). System still works perfectly, but want a little hobby and upgrade!

Newbie David here.  I'm a retired senior, built a system in 2015 but forgot everything I learned then.  I want to build a new system and keep my old (Working) system as backup!

I don't play video games and don't want a video card (Just need CPU with Graphics for movies)!  I don't want to use hard drives just SSD or M-2 SSDs.  Need lots of USB ports (As many 3.0 as possible) on motherboard.

Since today is the last day of Amazon's Prime Sell, I've come up with a few items and want advice as to if they will together.

1 - GIGABYTE B550M DS3H (AM4 AMD/B550/Micro ATX/Dual M.2/SATA 6Gb/s/USB 3.2 Gen 1/PCIe 4.0/HMDI/DVI/DDR4/Motherboard) = $88.00 (Lots of USB ports & PCI4

2 - Thermaltake S100 Tempered Glass Snow Edition Micro-ATX mini-Tower Computer Case with 120mm Rear Fan Pre-Installed CA-1Q9-00S6WN-00, White  =$49.00 (Small & White, looks great)

3 - AMD Ryzen 3 3200G 4-Core Unlocked Desktop Processor with Radeon Graphics = $220.00  (Lowest priced cpu with graphics I could find)  If you know of any other let me know!

This is the main items, I will be needing some ram and Windows 10 but that can wait for a few days!!

Any help would greatly be appreciated, Remember I'm not a gamer!!  David N.

$220 for a 3200G is a pretty terrible deal, you could get a 10400 or 11400 instead.

I own a B550M DS3H myself currently, and it is very subpar aside from connectivity; All other connectors are limited either by quantity or by the cheap VRMs, but mostly both. I'd suggest the MSI MPG B550 Gaming Plus instead, which is superior in pretty much every way you can think of. The 3200G is a bit too far into the bare-bones zone; Consider the 3400G, which has multithreading unlike the former, and should cost $149 at MSRP. As for your RAM, G.Skill kits are currently discounted on Newegg, meaning you can pick up a solid 16GB kit for around $80. Finally, try out Prime Tech Mart for your Windows 10 key; I used them for the license I'm using currently, so I can attest that they're legit.

you wanted a cpu with graphics to play movies. AMD doesn't have integrated graphics so you would want to go with intel.

I'm not sure why so many people wholeheartedly recommend boards with overheating VRMs, it's almost like there's no research being done.

Even the full-size ATX B560 version of this board thermal throttles and has shitty power delivery, the MicroATX B460 version I could only assume is far worse.

Anything less than a B560M Bazooka from MSI is worthless, regardless of budget. Typically MSI and Gigabyte compete for the best VRM/Memory overlocking on a budget, ASUS rarely (if ever) appears on that list.

@Downkey @Herman Mcpootis

I'm not sure about you guys, but every part that goes into a build should make sense and have a purpose. If your list fails to meet those basic requirements and/or does so at a shitty value, that's an instant fail in my book. 🙂

That's why I'm here at this point, I've seen too many bad recommendations to knowingly let them continue without my input. Stop making poor suggestions and then agreeing with eachother as though it's a good list.

Here's what I'd recommend:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/DFF7NP

CPU: Intel Core i5-11400  ($244.49 @ Amazon)

CPU Cooler: Scythe FUMA 2  ($59.99 @ Amazon)

Motherboard: MSI MAG B560M BAZOOKA  ($139.99 @ Amazon)

Memory: Crucial Ballistix 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) 3600Mhz CL16  ($93.99 @ B&H)

Storage: Crucial P2 1 TB  ($79.99 @ B&H)

Case: Phanteks Eclipse P360A  ($79.98 @ Amazon)

Power Supply: MSI A650GF 650W 80+ Gold  ($84.99 @ Amazon)

Case Fans: 2x Phanteks PH-F120SK  ($9.99 each @ Newegg)

Total: $803.40

It's a good starter, and if you'd like to turn it into more than just an HTPC in the future, the upgradeability is there to do so.

Also its a fucking office PC, you don't need a 650w Multi rail PSU, a $60 cooler, 3600MHZ RAM, and a $70 case. Is this a good build? Yes. Does this make sense? No.

you agreed with Herman's list, which had a MicroATX B460 board with an overheating VRM. Seems rather counterproductive.

Upgradeability. He's got a $1000 budget and that build is $800. It's got the capabilities of moving on from an HTPC in the future, unlike some of the other systems here that would essentially be e-waste after they've served their niche use case.

What future upgradeability is needed?

This is what OP is doing. If OP ever needed to upgrade then a CPU upgrade would be necessary. You don't need 650W. You don't need 3600MHZ. You don't need a $60 cooler. If the stock cooler is fine for gaming on the 11400, then why the hell does OP need a Fuma 2 for watching movies?
