I know red is designed for nas/raid, and blue is for regular users, but I am still not sure which to use.

I want the one that is most quiet, that is pretty much my main concern. From what I've seen they're pretty much the same speeds. I've heard people saying wd blue is loud which is why I initially thought I should go with a WD Red. If you have one of these hard drives and you comment here about it, could you please tell me the product id of it? I've noticed different models are different loudnesses when it comes to wd drives.

I've owned a black and green. The black was loud as hell (i think I got a bad batch) but it's really fast, apparently the blue isn't loud. The greens are pretty quiet and stop spinning after x value of time but only get a green if you have an SSD because they're pretty slow. Blues look good though too.

RED= NETWORK ATTACHED STORAGE

BLACK = POWER HOUSE

BLUE= NORMAL/HIGHEND

GREEN= LOW END POWERSAVING

there ya go . get Black for a few extra $$ or get Blue's like most folks

or get a Seagate Barracuda

..... that doesnt answer the whole point of the question : noise.

I have a wd black and find it loud, and am making a silence optimized build.

The green seems to slow for me, isn't it like half the speed of blue or red?

Not half. 5400 rpm instead of 7200rpm. Rpm isn't all that affects performance but you get the idea.

Then go with a green.

as marker said, green is a tad slower but it is more efficient and quiter in theory (ive never used a green personally)   black will be louder (i have never noticed in my rigs) but if you want silent than yes go for Green or maybe a standard Blue would suffice.

Stuff n Things

Blue are mainstream users who want a bit of performance but that limits you to 1TB a drive.

Red are virtually silent and are so well balanced they barely vibrate when powered on.

Red is a balance between low power consumption and data transfer rates. At 5400rpm with a 64MB Cache @6gbps they are great but RAID seems to loose you performance so how they can market it with that I don't know. It runs Battlefield 4 fine and loading times are good. The size limit at the moment is 3TB per HDD.

Blue however is about performance over power and noise so they will be slightly louder as it's running at 7200rpm. The other problem is the size's only go up to 1TB which isn't much when you have 160+ games between Steam and Origin.

I have a Red for my games and a Green for my OS and it's a nice balance in my opinion.

AMD FX 6350 @4.3GHz | Gigabyte 990XA-UD3 Rev. 3.0 | 8GB Dual Channel @1600MHz Corsair Vengeance LP | 2GB MSI GTX 660 Ti Power Edition

CiT Vengeance x11 | 500GB Segate, 2TB WD Green, 2TB WD Red | OCZ ZT 650W | Akasa Venom Voodoo | Ozone 5.1 Strato Evolution
