How can I know a Motherboard will have multiple USB 3.0 Hubs before I buy it, boot it, and check Devmgr?

Ellevol

Hello This is my first post here and I've done about 10 hours of scouring the internet for an answer to this question: How can I know a Motherboard will have multiple USB 3.0 Hubs before I buy it, boot it, and check Devmgr?

My 'New build' is really scavenging a i7-9700K, a P2200 Graphics card, and some RAM sticks and turning them into a Video Capture system, by adding a Motherboard, and 2 Elgato Cam Link Pros (LINK HERE). Elgato's website says that in order to run 2 cam link pro cars, the motherboard must have 2 USB 3.0 Root Hubs (this is Not an external USB hub to add more ports, it's apart of the Motherboard itself). I have a Asus 7390-E Motherboard and booted the system on tthere, only to find out there was only 1 USB 3.0 Root Hub.

I need to buy a mother board that has Multiple root hubs for this to work, can any one help with this?

System Specifics:

  • i7-9700k (LGA 1151)
  • 16GB 3200 RAM
  • Nvidia P2200 graphics card
  • (2) Elgato Cam Lnk Pros (requires a PCIex4/x8/x16 slot ... so I need two of these on the MB)
  • 750W power supply
  • Was using a Asus Z390-E <--need

Thanks!

The board  manufacturer will have a support page and on that should be a manuals and documentation tab for a pdf and in that should be detailed specifications and probably a block diagram showing how the various USB connectors connect to the controller chip. From that you can tell if there's more than one.

Pardon?

Cam link pro solely use a pcie connector and not usb, so I don't see why you bother with usb port assignment

Maybe you mean camlink 4k?

Ethier way what ever camlink you referring to your motherboard will support it,

If you refer too pcie camlink pro your motherboard have the necessary pcie to drive it, while if you're referring to camlink 4k your motherboard have 2 front usb 5gbps and iirc those are the minimum requirements and front usb type c 10gbps which if you think about it using a proper hub can split those 10gbps into 2* 5gbps

Edit

And a bunch other on the back so I didn't see you're getting any bandwidth starvation anythime soon when only using 2 camlink

Any motherboard should work if you add a USB 3.0 card. By definition this adds another root hub.

Main: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, 16 GB 4400 MHz DDR4 Fedora 38 x86_64

Secondary: AMD Ryzen 5 5600G, 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, Fedora 38 x86_64

Server: AMD Athlon PRO 3125GE, 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4 ECC, TrueNAS Core 13.0-U5.1

Home Laptop: Intel Core i5-L16G7, 8 GB 4267 MHz LPDDR4x, Windows 11 Home 22H2 x86_64

Work Laptop: Intel Core i7-10510U, NVIDIA Quadro P520, 8 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, Windows 10 Pro 22H2 x86_64

You simply consult the specifications and user manual for the board available on the manufacturer's website.

Although in most cases you should simply be able to look at a picture of the board online and look for USB3 headers.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Elgato's support page specifically states that for multiple cam link pro cards you need a mother board with multiple usb3.0 root Hubs.

I need all three full pci lanes for the graphics card and 2 cam link pros. So I don't think that's an option. I'd rather just buy a correct MB. Ive reached out to Asus to ask what board would have multiple root Hubs and an 1151 processor socket.

Can you share the manuals?
