Open Media Petition to Stop Bill C-10

<removed by staff>

Our government just used a gag order to shut down further debate of Bill C-10. In a shocking move not seen since the 1990s, they’ve cut off review of the Bill, and are rushing it to a Parliament vote as soon as they can.1

Make no mistake: Bill C-10 gives the CRTC huge power over every app and platform you use on the Internet. Under C-10, the CRTC will set rules to promote or bury every video, meme, and podcast we upload to the Internet, filling our feeds with their outdated 20th-century vision of what counts as “Canadian” content — whether we want it there or not.

There’s just hours left to stop this. Parliament will decide NEXT WEEK whether to vote through Bill C-10. Tell your MP NOW that this is not how we want to see our culture promoted — they MUST vote no on Bill C-10!

Petitions are not allowed unless prior approved by staff.

Also, there is a blanket ban on politics this directly falls under that policy.

Spoiler

Q: But the other person was discussing politics first, I was just replying!

A: The Community Standards state that political discussion is not allowed. They don't state "being the first person in a political discussion is not allowed, but people after the first person are ok". All participants in a political discussion are discussing politics, and therefore they are all violating the No Politics rule.

Q: But everything I said is true, I was just stating facts!

A: If your factual statements were intended to convey a political view, then they violate the No Politics rule. To enforce the "No Politics" rule, we evaluate whether statements are political. We do not evaluate whether they are true or false, because that is unrelated to whether they violate the "No politics" rule.

Q: You're violating my first amendment right to free speech!

A: If you're talking about the first amendment to the United States Constitution, please be aware that this forum is owned and operated out of Canada. The United States Constitution does not apply to Canada. Also, the first amendment of the United States Constitution does not give citizens a general right to free speech. It only prohibits government action that limits speech (see MCA v. Halleck). The LinusTechTips forum staff is in fact not a US government entity, so our removal of your content would not violate the first amendment even if we were located in the United States (which, again, we aren't). To learn more about your constitution's first amendment, please see here.

Q: You're censoring me to control the content on the forum!

A: Yes, we are. That is why we are here in the first place. We control the content on the forum to remove things we do not like, such as advertising spambots, pornography, people posting links to their eBay items for sale, people spamming their affiliate sponsorship links, and political discussion. For your convenience, we have compiled a list of all the things we do not like, and posted them publicly so that everyone knows exactly what they are. It is called the Community Standards. Please read them so that you know ahead of time what types of content will be removed from your posts.

Q: I'm speaking out against some terrible thing happening somewhere in the world! If you silence me, that means you're supporting those terrible things!

A: No, it means we're supporting the removal of posts that discuss politics or otherwise violate the forum rules. The specifics of the political message are irrelevant, and we remove all such posts regardless of what side they take.

Q: But it was posted in the Off Topic section!

A: If you read the announcement pinned in the Off Topic section titled "READ BEFORE POSTING" in all caps before posting, you will find that all forum rules still apply in the Off Topic section. Since "No political content" is a forum rule, political content in the Off Topic section is not permissible.
