So I just recently bought new ram its 32g (16x2) at 3200mz but it won't run at that speed I can get it to 2133 and seems fine but my old ram was 16g (8x2) that would run at 3000mz with no problem. Would i get better prformance with my old ram or my new ram?

The rest of my pc specs

I7 6700k

Rtx 2080 ti

1tb ssd

750w gold power supply

Better performance with the old ram.

2x8gb is easier on the memory controller. The 6700K is a decent processor, but the memory controller is kind of picky when running larger amounts of memory.

If you don't NEED 32gb, then return the memory and get your moneys back. Does windows ever say you're running low on system memory with 16gb??

No it doesn't, everything is fine just wanted to have 32gb for this game I played it recommends having 16gb thought upgrading would help with prformance

Nope, with your system, frequency is everything. From Cpu core, Cache (ring) and memory. Fast is better.

Okay thanks alot, I just have one more question do you have any recommendations for motherboard and cpu upgrades if I decide to hold on to that ram for a future upgrade?

I'm assuming you tried enabling XMP, and it fails?

Make sure you are using the correct / recommended memory slots on the motherboard for a two-stick setup.

DDR4-3200?

Well you can used it with any of the current gen CPUs, since they all (AMD and Intel) use DDR4 memory.

If you wait too long, the new CPUs will be using DDR5.

AMD Ryzen 9000 Rig

  • AMD R7 9800X3D + Alphacool CORE 1 w/ Performance Mount Kit + Thermal Grizzly AM5 Contact Frame
  • Gigabyte X870E Aorus Pro Ice
  • 32GB (16GB X2) G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB DDR5-6400
  • Sapphire NITRO+ 6800 XT Special Edition + EKwb Full Cover Block
  • Custom Loop w/ 2x 360mm Radiators
  • WD SN850X + WD SN750 + Samsung 980
  • EVGA P2 850W + Red/White CableMod Cables
  • Lian-Li O11 Dynamic EVO XL

AMD Ryzen 5000 Rig

  • AMD R7-5800X
  • Gigabyte B550 Aorus Pro AC
  • 32GB (16GB X 2) Crucial Ballistix RGB DDR4-3600
  • Gigabyte Vision RTX 3060 Ti OC

The same rule of thumb still applies. I cannot guarantee 32gb running 3200mhz (XMP) on any platform. For reference and guesstimate in this forum hundreds (if not thousands) of threads contain the title " cannot run xmp of X frequency".

I would send the memory back and save it for the platform upgrade. Cpu and board. Or wait for DDR5 like rascal mentioned... which is what I'm doing actually.

Yeah I have tried running in xmp mode and the pc is on but nothing will happen on the screen until I power off and put my old ram in and then it boots up, thank you for the info much appreciated! Imma just start looking into new mother boards and processor's

If you want to return the kit, that's fine too.

Unless you really want to try to get this 32GB kit running with your i7-6700K, you may need to do some BIOS adjustments, IN ADDITION to just setting XMP on.

On the Intel side, I've only work with 4th Gen / 6th Gen (X99, Broadwell-E) / 8th Gen .... so I'm not 100% familiar with 6th Gen Skylake CPUs.

I'm assuming it's similar to 8th Gen.

But you'll probably need to tweak the VCCSA (System Agent voltage) and/or  VCCIO voltages..
