Yes, i tried that back in June.

/edit:

I replaced the mainboard and the top slot does work now. Thanks for the suggestions!

  • Mainboard: Gigabyte Aorus Elite x570
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5900X
  • NVMe SSD
    Samsung MZ-V7S1T0BW 970 EVO Plus 1 TB
  • GPU: Sapphire AMD R9 390 (2+ years old)

The build is around 4 weeks old (except the GPU, of course). Couple of days ago I turned off my machine in the evening and went to bed. The next morning I wanted to start the PC and it greeted me with the beep code 1x LONG 2x SHORT. Graphic card error. System booted correctly, but my displays got no signal. I tried pressing the graphics card onto the mainboard, unplug and plug the monitor cables, unplug and plug the graphics card onto the mainboard, checked the power cables from PSU. Last thing I tried was installing the card on the second PCIe-port (PCIe-4x) - and it worked. Unfortunately, I don't have a second graphics card to test - and friends understandably don't want to lend me theirs for testing.

My Question now is, is it possible that the graphics card is somehow broken and it won't run on the PCIe-16x-port anymore, but on the PCIe-4x-port? Or do you think that the PCIe-16x-slot is broken? Is there a way to test it without buying a $3000 graphics card? Also, I think it's odd, that it happened over night, without any indicators (that I noticed) during the day before.

Would that be the case if the machine ran for about 4 weeks without any issues? I mean, the CPU is firmly attached to the mobo and under the AIO block. I don't think it can move without me noticing.

Anything can happen over time, maybe unlikely but its a simple thing to at least test.

Like i said, the upper PCIE slot comes directly from the CPU, unless the PCIE slot itself is broken (you would be able to see damage in the slot)

Then the other option is the CPU connection to the socket.

  • 2 months later...

Sorry for reviving this thread, but I finally came around to 1) buy a new GPU and 2) check the CPU.

I cleaned the CPU with Isopropanol, reapplied the thermal paste and re-inserted the CPU. I removed my old GPU and installed the new GPU (RX 6900 XT) on the top PCIe 16x slot. The PC booted, but after I installed the drivers and rebooted, the same beep code was coming and there was no image. I put the GPU into the PCIe 4x slot, which somehow works. I'll RMA the board now, I hope this fixes it - thanks for your replies!
