Then i would recommend you a linux distribution of your choice due to better stability and performance.

Gotta get the sweet, sweet linux kernel performance.

 

Edit: if you are a Linux beginner, I would recommend a debian based OS, because it has the greatest software support and is the easiest to work with.

Use a program like veeam to manage the backups? They have a free version.

 

Or just mount the cifs share from the windows PC and use robocopy/rsync scripts.
