i can't it will crash on boot

Your efforts are probably better spent on figuring out why the newer releases crash. End of life or even outdated releases will only become more and more of a pain to keep working with.

I strongly suggest you try different distros out. Staying on 17.04 is a terrible idea from a security standpoint. Also problems like these on 17.04 can't be solved with hacks. The solution is to upgrade.

I'd suggest trying fedora 34 or ubuntu 21.04 as those are very new. Also, Fedora is a somewhat different distro than ubuntu so you may just have better luck with it on your hardware.

Always start with informing us of your hardware -- make and model of machine in use or list Make, CPU, amount of RAM and what mobo is in it, etc.

Could have saved a lot of time and effort.

Go to

https://mirrors.evowise.com/mxlinux-iso/ANTIX/Final/antiX-19/

and choose

antiX-19.4_386-base.iso

after download, it is best check the md5sum to make sure it is a good download of the ISO, then install, if you can.

There are other distros that will run on the old Vista desktop with 2GB RAM and a 2GHz CPU, but not many.  I think Bodhi still has a Legacy distro, and Puppy Fossapup will probably run.

Forget ubuntu -- you need a 32bit distro (i386 is the same thing).

Another option is to load Ventoy on a USB stick and then put the ISOs on it, then boot to the USB Device.  But try antiX first, is my suggestion.

Best wishes!

Core 2's are 64-bit.

Yes they are; with only 2GB RAM -- only puppy is worthwhile, performance-wise, IMO.

Besides, he's a newbie and doesn't need the headaches bugs in 'buntus cause.

At 2GHz, and only the RAM, it's user's choice;

and I stand by my recommendation of antiX as the best choice for old hardware.

Also, no systemd BS in antiX or Devuan.
