Start off by saying hello.  Ive been building pcs since i was 18.  Firefighter here in Louisiana.

Possibly getting another psu but let me get into my issue.  Two days ago, the pc that i built 2-3 years ago (which has never given me a single problem) was running.  I was drinking coffee and writing a email.  I received a phone call and got up for about 2-3 minutes.  I left the room.  When I returned the pc was on, fans spinning rainbow pattern, fans seemed to be running higher than usual.  The monitor was on but no display.  Corsair fans, cooler were running also, no display.  I have attemped to: run one stick or ram, reseat cpu, cooler, ran without gpu with intergrated graphics.  cleared cmos.  ran with only minimal hardware, no ssd etc..took gpu out and used it in my sons pc and gpu worked.  ruled that out.  I did take the corsair ram sticks out and put them in his pc which has the same exact motherboard etc. and his did not boot to windows.  But..used his ram which knew was working in my pc and no go.  same outcome.

Next thing i thought of doing would be to buy a inexpensive power supply to try on my pc.

My specs are: asus prime z390a motherboard, seasonic prime ultra plat 1000 psu, evga 2080 super ftw3 ultra,  i79700k, corsair h150i rgb cooler, samsung nvme 970 pro windows, samsung ssds evo, corsair 2x8gb sticks,

main question for posting in this thread is to ask about power supplies.  I have always had platinum seasonics in my last two builds over 10 years and no issues.  But ive read some threads about seasonic on here that were disturbing.  issues with focus and prime psus and 3080s?

I was wondering between these or if you have other opinions on power supplies, im all ears

Seasonic Prime Gold GX850

Asus thor Gold 850

Be Quiet Straight power 11 850 Platinum

Be Quiet Straight power 11 1000 Platinum

Be Quiet Dark Power 850 titanium pricey

EVGA supernova G5 1000 gold

EVGA supernova GA 850 gold

i did notice alot of psus are hard to find and prices have soared.

Ive used a evga 850 in my sons build and his is still going strong after 4-5 years.  My original seasonic was a 1000 platinum i used for 7 years no issues.  Granted i still dont know if this seasonic is the culprit or just a bad ram stick or mobo going bad.  if there are any other power supplys you guys recommend, please do.  I have looked at the psu tier list.  dont really have a budget, I dont mind paying for reliability and quality.  thanks in advance.

You should test it with a cheap psu first, just to see if it boot up.

You got a very good psu there.

Ok well, I scrapped my whole pc and bought all new stuff.  Rma motherboard, cpu, ram, sold the rest except for the seasonic 1000 plat. and the evga 2080 super.  I tested the gpu in another pc and found it worked fine.

Last night I installed everything in my new case along with the seasonic.  Hit the power button and the pc wanted to boot, but then turned off.  I hit the button again after checking every connection and no go.  Spent an hour looking at every connection and couldnt find anything wrong.  Hit the switch again and the seasonic had a small electrical smell coming from it.  I know the smell far too well being a firefighter of 24 years.  I immediately ripped the seasonic out, went to my local best buy and found a cheap corsair rmx 850 watt. the 2021 version.  threw it in there and wham, the pc worked.  I then started a rma for the seasonic.

My next question is, What is a good reliable brand power supply in the 1000 watt category?  Ive looked at evga, corsair (never owned one) be quiet ( no service centers in usa?) Probably not going back with seasonic.  Im batting 500 with them.  Owned two plat 1000, first one lasted 6 years, sold it.  This one died for no reason after two years sitting on my desktop writing a email.  Any other brand you guys can recommend or models, please by all means.

Why do you need a 1kW PSU ? Keep your 'cheap' Corsair RM-x 850W lol. It's good for almost anything you can throw at it.

Ive always had a 1k unit since building pcs.  Just a habit i assume.  I also assumed I would need a 1000 watt for the newer 30 series 3080s pulling 3-400 watts.  I know alot of people think that but I actually bought into it just future proofing myself with a 1000.  Is the Hx series a more reliable unit? I usually read reviews etc but havent had time with work and this pc breaking down on me.

So in your opinion this corsair is a good unit?  feel free to pick it apart.  I would have gotten the 1000 rmx but it wasnt locally available and I needed a psu asap to test these parts before 30 day return went out.
