What VPN would you suggest for a single user only?

I'm very unfamiliar with VPN's and the only thing remotely close I've done is use a different DNS server to get around some blocked sites by my ISP. I always see these ads for VPNs but I don't really now much to make an informed decision which I should go for. Not to mention they do offer cheap monthly subscription if you pay upfront for a year or so but that's still quite heavy on the pocket. So like the title says, if I'm just the only person using the VPN which one should I go for?

I think You should give Proton VPN a try. There is a free tier also
