So for a while I've used an old ssd with a USB 3.0 to sata cable and it's been really good with super solid speeds. However it's only 120gb and I need a bit more storage.

Do you think it's better to get a 1tb external storage device like Samsung t5 for example. Or just get another internal ssd and use the sata cable. The speeds are already good enough for me and I'd save like £30+ using an internal one. But I'm not sure if there is any other factors I'm not taking into consideration.

Thoughts?

The only downside I can think of to using an internal drive externally is potentially breaking the connector off the adapter if it's not an actual enclosure.

Perfectly fine to use an internal drive in an enclosure. It tends to be a but more expensive to buy both a drive and enclosure than a ready-made one, but if you already have the enclosure and can save a bit certainly do so.

Ah, so it would be in an enclosure, it's literally just an internal ssd with a wire that goes from usb 3.0 to sata

If you're using a proper enclosure then there's no real downside. That's what I tend to do when I need USB storage. Plus you can upgrade the drive in the future, or swap out the enclosure for one with a different connector if needed.

External SSDs have always seemed more expensive than an internal drive, and enclosures aren't very expensive. I think I paid $10 for one a few years ago.

Even just using a USB to SATA adapter isn't too bad as long as you're careful with the SATA connector. I'd recommend getting a proper enclosure though. I see them on Amazon for around £7-8 or so.
