I have a 8600k oced to 4.7/0 avx offset/ 4.7 cache.

I just bought a i9 9900ks for $360.

How dumb was this or was this a good purchase?

My GPU is still a 1080 but I am looking to upgrade this to a 3080 or 3080ti (when the prices are more palatable)

From what I can see the price isn't unreasonable.

But if its a good purchase depends if you needed the extra performance or not. Is your productivity or quality of life improving by buying it? And i'm not talking about the thrill of getting cool new stuff. That feeling disappears quickly. Trust me, I know 😉

Any unnecessary purchase is a bad purchase

I just meant from a performance perspective. For $360, could I have gotten a better performing CPU?

By that metric, I think you are good. You will have to get new motherboard for anything potensially better

yes. Ryzen 5 5600x is 300 dollars and is quite a bit faster than the 9900ks in games. Also fpr 360 dollars 10700k/11700k would have been slightly better choice

I Use my knowledge as business owner and self taught technician aswell as an AI to help people. AI might be controversial but it actually works pretty well 90% of the time.

Yeah but that would mean a motherboard swap so with that cost in mind you got a decent deal here.

Also a 9900k is a really good upgrade over a 8600k. Sure the single core performance will probably be near identical between the ocd 8600 and the stock 9900k. BUT the 9900k has 8cores and 16 threads. A lot of games are/have started to not run well on pure 6core cpus like your 8600k. So at worst you get a more stable gameplay in current games and future wise you have a cpu that will last for a good while.
