Hey guys first post. So I built my current computer back in 2007 with a Athlon 64 X2 4600+, ddr2 and what not so I'm long overdue for an upgrade. I'm from the US and I don't really have a budget because I have been saving for a few years now. The aim for this build is a few things; I am going to college in a few months for engineering so I will be using various cad and engineering related programs, and playing the latest games like Battlefield 4, Crysis 3, Bio Shock, also games from the past few years because I'm very far behind. So I'm looking for any advice on whether everything is compatible, if I'm forgetting something, maybe a different component that is cheaper and performs better, or any problems or things that I should know about a specific part.

Case: Cooler Master HAF 922

Motherboard: ASUS MAXIMUS VI HERO LGA 1150

Graphics Card: EVGA 780 Ti Superclocked

Powersupply: Seasonic 760W, 80 PLUS PLATINUM Full Modular certified Active PFC

Processor: Intel Core i7-4770K

Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250 GB, and a WD BLACK SERIES 2TB

Ram: G.SKILL Trident X Series 16GB 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-1600C7D-16GTX

KeyBoard: Corsair Vengeance K70

Monitor: Eizo FORIS FS2333

Mouse: Razer DeathAdder 2013

CD-Tray: SAMSUNG Black 18X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA DVD-ROM Drive Model SH-118BB

Os: Windows 8.1 Pro

CPU Cooler: Hyper 212 EVO

I do not plan on overclocking because this build has to last me for a while. I have heard the sound is ok on the Motherboard. I do not plane to sli. 760W PSU in case I need to add something. i7 for multiple applications. Is there any advantage of the 840 Pro over the EVO. 1600mhz ram at a cas latency 7! Is the keyboard ok for long typing secessions? I wanted an ips monitor, think I found a good one. Any Os is an upgrade I'm still on windows xp. Hyper 212 EVO because its better than the stock cooler. Will the Hyper 212 have any space issues?

Thanks

Welcome! Everything looks good and compatible to me. The cpu could be downgraded to an i5 4670k if you're not doing any video editing or along those lines. I'm not firmiliar with the monitor. The GTX 780 Ti does not have great price/performance, I personally think you should get a 780 and save for another 780 for dual SLI. Thats just my two cents.

So the i7 is not going to help at all with solidworks or anything similar?

The difference in the i7 4770k and i5 4670k is almost purely hyperthreading vs no hyperthreading, the 4770k having hyperthreading. You'd have to research a bit on the programs you'll be using to see if it will help at all. I can honestly say I have no idea what the heck hyperthreading is and all I know is that it helps in video editing xD.

LOL xD You say you dont have much budget but you are going for the 4770k, 780Ti and Maximus Hero xD Anyway just give us a budget range first.

Also your explanation is really confusing. You dont plan to overclock but this build has to last a while? Are you worry about the lifetime if you overclock? If yes then I will tell you this, overclock dont really affect the lifetime of your component that much, as long as you dont go crazy overboard. If you still dont want to overclock then there's no need to go for the 4770k and Maximus Hero, as those part existed for overclock. you can just go with the i7 4770 instead.

The Hyper 212 wont have any space issues, your case is a midtower anyway. For OS you should definitely upgrade, I still prefer Win7 over 8 (I do own both, WIn8 on a touchscreen laptop and 7 on my desktop) but you should look into what program you are using and see if it's ok to go to Win8.

Well the i7 4770k is better than the i5 4670k purely on the part that the i7 have hyperthread and i5 is not. hyperthread is something along this line: your CPU will have 2 thread per physical core, meaning it can run almost like a duo core on a single core -> better multitasking, and program that can utilized this will gain alot benefit from it. But this is where the problem come in, for gaming there isnt alot of game that can utilized multi-core as well as HT, this is different from video editing programming, they tend to utilized this alot better. So if you are working on this field just look up to see if the program you're using can utilized HT, if yes then you can gain benefit from it.

Budget is around $3000 USD. Yes i was talking about lifetime and overclocking is not out of the question but I'm probably going to wait a a while before I do so and have a friend help me. As for the OS i have spent time with both and i keep going back and forth. Does anyone know if the Red Cherry MX keys will be good for long typing secessions?

Nope, it's not going to last a lifetime no matter what. It will probably last around 3 year as a high-spec PC, and another 2-3 year as a workable machine, but after that ... nope. The HDD and SSD for example will wearout eventually, there will be a lot more powerful CPU and Graphic card after around 2 years, which lead to the program/games require more power as they keep adding stuff to it. You said that you are going into college so I think this build will be able to last all 3-4 years in college for you, maybe with additional upgrade along the line if you want to keep being the best. So anyway my advice is spend around 2000$ on this (without the keyboard/mouse/monitor considered), which will grant you one of the best PC for the moment, and save up the rest of the money for when you need to upgrade (or very likely that by the time this one is out of date you will have another 2000$ ready and you can just buy the best 2000$ PC at that time)

Regarding your parts list:

1. No point in such an expensive motherboard unless you need its features over the ones available on cheaper alternatives.

2. The 780 Ti is a bad value. I'd suggest getting a 290 or 780 instead.

3. Psu is overkill even for 'upgrades unless you're dropping in a hundred hdds or something.. You could run the system off of a 450w if you really wanted to.

4. Why Win8 Pro and the Eizo display? Is the optical drive really necessary?

It would improve performance but what you're doing wouldn't likely need more than a modern celeron/pentium. College engineering CAD work is fairly light.

Again I ment overclocking effecting the life time of the parts. Of course I do not expect this to last forever lol. But yea i get what your saying :)

Oc'ing is fairly simple and your cpu should still last longer than you need it to as long as you don't push crazy voltages.

Reds are pretty unsatisfactory for typing. I know these things are subjective but only 1 of my friends prefers reds. Everyone else prefers blues. I do too despite having browns. I went with browns mainly because it felt more like knocking on wood which was a nice feeling and it was the only switch for the G710+.

It's also better to get what you need without spending more and upgrading more frequently than buying expensive parts and trying to keep them for a long time.

Should I think about a dedicated sound card? Will I notice a difference using speakers or will i have to use a headset to notice?

No, no, and no. Speakers and headsets don't really benefit from soundcards. Certain headphones can.

Nope~ and nope~ Unless you are an audiophile with a thousands USD speaker/headset alike. I remember TekSyndicate (youtube channel) make an episode on this problem. With a good motherboard you should already have Audio Boost (like the MSI Z87'G45 I'm going to buy soon) or smt alike, which is already good enough.

Haha, well it's helpful so it's good isnt it :3

And all this talk about audio and the word audiophile make me remember something... once I have seen someone who asked "Is audiophile a person who like to hear kids talking?"...

Win 8 becasue I dont want to behind in OS's. Eizo because it has the specs I want. Optical yes I have lots of programs on disk. And by "unsatisfactory" do you mean pleasure or comfort because I just care if its comfortable

--but why Win8.1 Pro specifically instead of the normal version?

Which specs in particular?

By 'unsatisfactory' I mean both. It's also less tactical in that the click is less pronounced.

What he mean by unsatisfactory is about comfortable. Go to Techquickie channel on youtube from our dear Linus and search for the Mechanical Keyboard Switchs ASAP episode, he will explain in detail how the switch is like
