mine shows 8

and i have used it many times without issue.

I haven't used the tool in a while, so I want to confirm this here since I can't find the answer anywhere else surprisingly. The USB currently has 8 files on it from the tool and nothing else, but I can't remember if that's what the initial install does or if that's what happens after using it to boot a system. Is it always those 8 files, or is it normally something else that gets decompressed when you're performing an install? If it is normally compressed, is there any harm in leaving it decompressed (directory issues)?

The bootable USB works just like using CD or DVD would. The install process doesn't write anything to drive its run from. If there's key to be used, then its some generic key you can easily find online. Activation keys are not stored on installation media as the two are not connected like that.
