Hey,

I bought parts for a new PC two weeks ago. I have the Corsair HX 850 psu which is insane coil whine. Just from opening a browser you can sometimes hear it through my headphones but it's worst when benchmarking/gaming.

I contacted the retailer where I got it from and since it's within 30 days of purchase they gave me a returns number to drop it off at their store. But the problem is I need a working PC whilst this goes back to get tested etc. I did more research on the 850 hx and it seems a lot of people have coil whine so I'm afraid to even get a replacment of that specific model.

Should I go ahead and buy a RMX 750W Gold PSU and then take the 850 HX back for a refund (assuming coil whine is faulty).

If you was in this situation what would you do?

Definitely, this is what I would do if I need the system while returning the HX850 for coil whine.

I'm just worried the retailer won't refund me for the coil whine, this is the only problem I will have. I'm going to order the RMX 750 Gold now and send back the HX 850 to the retailer once the 750w arrives. Thanks for the help.

The retailer must refund you if you return an item, consult your consumer buying protection laws as well as if you use a credit card and they refuse to refund, contact them regarding the issue.

Just phoned them, he said "its up to the technicians to warrant the refund" so he wouldn't he answer me directly for a refund for coil whine.

That sounds pretty shady. I hope you aren't buying the RM750x from the same retailer you're sending the HX850 back to. It's simply business, you pay for an item, you get the product in return- simple exchange. You return the product within the return window, you get your money back. They have no legal reasons to withhold that money from you (again, consult consumer protection laws and if paid with a credit card, they have buyer protections and you can do a chargeback- credit card issuer will open an investigation into the matter).

I'm not. I'm buying the rmx 750 elsewhere. Kind of annoyed actually, I ended up buying all my parts through that retailer specifically because they said they would build it for me but there was complications etc. I had enough and asked them to send me all the parts instead and I would build it. I was pretty desperate to have a PC running so ended up buying all the parts specifically from them which I deeply regret because I could of got parts cheaper elsewhere.

But yeah, will order the rmx 750 now elsewhere from a good site (scan)

That's good, they probably have a grudge against you after complications of building the PC for you and deciding to have the parts sent to you now. Glad you're getting the power supply from another retailer.

Yeah you are most likely right. The plan was to get all my parts from them and have them assemble it for me because of my absurd work hours during the last 3 weeks. However I found out they will just ship my PC without the component boxes so if a part was to ever go wrong (the coil whine psu for example) i would have to either ship my entire pc back to them etc, absolute nightmare.

I just prey that the rmx 750w will not have coil whine like this HX 850 does. It's bad enough to want me to get it replaced otherwise a small whine would be OK for me.

Thanks for the help.

That sucks you'll have to build it yourself with long work hours.

The Corsair RM750x is a good power supply, haven't really heard of any complaints from these units.

Awesome. Don't even know why I got the HX 850w, I don't even need that much wattage, heck I think a 650w would be find for a 5800x and RTX 3070 FE.

Just ordered this one  - https://www.scan.co.uk/products/750w-corsair-rmx-series-rm750x-full-modular-80plus-gold-sli-crossfire-single-rail-625a-135mm-fan-atx
