Hi everyone, I'm looking for a new pair of headphones. at the moment I use a pair of AKG k518 for my portable audio uses, but the thing is I think the audio out of them are better than any of the other headphones I've used. So I'm wondering if I want something withe the same "sound-signature" should I go with a higher end AKG headphone or is there similar cans for better price somewhere.

I've heard a lot of good stuff about the Audio-Technica ATH-m50 and Beyerdynamic custom one pro, but I've never tried anything from either company. I've been looking at the AKG k 242 & 272, anyone have any recommendations?

I listen to almost everything, lately I've been listening to a lot of electronic music with a lot of bass, and that's where my K518s have showed that, even for a small pair of headphones, they can kick out some smooth controlled bass.

I also have a FiiO E17 that I use to get some better sound quality from my laptop, which I think can power most headphones that's not too expensive.

Budget around 150£.

How does the 558s sound then?

They have a pleasant, somewhat bassy, but relaxed sound. They aren't described as "harsh," so I don't think they have very bright treble. Although you have a wide soundstage thanks to its open-back design, it's not as "open" as other headphones like it in its price range (more intimate, less soundstage). Its bass is boosted, but it's "rich" and "deep."

I recommend the Sennheiser HD 598s, which are like an improved version of the HD 558s. They sound better for it. You could mod the HD 558s to sound a little more like them, but unless you want to do that to your expensive headphones, I suggest you just pick the 598s from the get-go. Sounds pretty much like the 558s, but better. Has that same warm, relaxed sound signature and rolled off highs.

I mean if you like the AKG sound by all means you can get another pair of AKG. I hear the K612 is pretty good for the price but I do not know europe prices. Other headphones to look into are Beyer's DT line and Sennheiser 558. I do not know how the k518 sound so if you can tell me what you're looking for in a headphone I might be able to help more.

558's are pretty neutral sounding as many say, but if you want closed headphones, Shure SRH440 with 840 pads are great, and flat and stuff.

Some claim the AKG K240's are some of the best studio / reference headphones, but I haven't personally tried them. I've heard many good things about Sony MDR-v6 and 7506 though.

Reviews: JBL J33i   M50s   SRH440   Soundmagic PL50

Well I'd say they're good allrounders, not harsh at all, as in my ears won't bleed if I listen to a soprano go really high, but I never feel like they should go higher. it's not often I listen to classic, but when I do, I  want it to be really clear and not distort in the highs. Nowdays I mostly listen to electronic music, so the headphones obviously needs to have some good bass (not muddy bass!), the rest of the time I listen to a lot of different rock genres, and some crazy japanese pop songs from time to time.

This is what I use them for, and for a portable headphone I feel they perform great (they're actually the best headphones I own), so I want something similar but that will give me even more. So what I thought was "why not go for the same people again, they made these ones and they're pretty good", but then I've seen evereybody talking about ATH-m50 and custom one pros. They are in a lower price range but if they perform as well as my suggestions from AKG then I dunno :S

I love the sound in my K518s but I feel that i should get some better and more comfortable ones for my desktop uses.

Try these from Sony: Sony Pro MDR 7506,  I use these and they are awesome.

Sorry if I come over a bit shallow, but I absolutely hate that padding.

I think the K612 or Shure 440 with 840 pads would be nice if you are looking for some nice neutral headphones. If you want more bass, V-Modas are the way to go. I really like jpop on my DT770 but some people complain about the highs on the DT line. They are all good options.

I don't think I want open backs because of the sound leakage, which is why I looked at semi-open and closed ones, starting to realize that I just might want some closed ones like the K272. I am a bit shallow and want some headphones that looks really nice too and the V-modas does not fit in with me (yes I'm that shallow). I like bass yes, but not rattle you skull bass, just want it to be there, if the bass is absent then they're no fun to listen to, right?

Semi is going to leak sound just as much as open headphones but it's not that bad unless you are in a small room with other people. For closed, Beyerdynamic DT770 comes to mind and I've heard good things about the Fostex I mentioned before.

Edit: JK that was a different thread. I personally really want Mayflower's ver 3 mod of the Fostex t50rp.

I've heard that semi's leak a lot of sound too, I was hoping to get a pair that would be suited for long travels i.e sitting in a noicy car for 7 hours etc. and also what OHMs would I choose for those DT770, what's the big difference? Also a new thing I discovered while sifting through reviews was frequency response. Some people writing that having from 12Hz - 38,5 kHz is a new dimension of sound :S Wouldn't that be decided by the source? So if my file is only encoded to 24kHz there would be no merit to having any headphones that go any higher than this?

The frequency range spec for headphones is completely meaningless. You couldn't make a voice coil produce a 20Hz tone while keeping it unable to produce a 19Hz tone, even if you wanted to. A graph of the frequency response is much more helpful.
