~50% FPS Drops At Random Times, Half-Second Desktop Freezes (Video clips attached)

Hi there,

I've been having this issue for at least 2.5 years now and changing components did not fix the issue.

This happens in 80% of the games that I play, new or old.

Also, even in normal desktop applications this seems to happen.
For example, sometimes if I open a new tab or start typing in Chrome then my PC freezes for what feels like about half a second.
And sometimes the freeze occurs when I open any application. 

Examples of games that this happens in very often: Red Dead Redemption 2, CS:GO, SoTTR, Dishonored, Skyrim, PUBG

Examples of games that don't seem to be affected (limited sample, as this happens in most games): Resident Evil 7, Death Stranding, Hollow Knight

 

Have tried the games on HDD and on SSD, various Windows 10 versions (from 1809 and up)


PLEASE HELP AS THIS IS RUINING MY LOVE OF PC GAMING

Changed to RTX 2080 and new PSU (Super Flower Leadex II) but issue remained.

Monitor your CPU/GPU/RAM/VRAM/DISK usage while gaming, these types of stutters usually happen when;

  • Disk is not able to stream assets to ram or vram fast enough.
  • Running out of VRAM and thus assets are extended into RAM (aka "Shared memory").
  • CPU is getting hardware interrupts, again most likely your storage devices.
  • Running out of RAM also can cause this but I highly doubt this is the issue here.

Hi Levent thanks for your prompt reply.

I am going to try those things. My latest suspicion has become disk usage and I am going to try monitoring the DISK usage of all the drives.

Push comes to shove, I'm going to try removing all disks and only running OS and games on the Nvme drive to see if any disks or cables could be causing the issue.

I've never gotten the name of the suspicion I've developed this past week, but I think you nailed it on the head (Hardware interrupts from disks).

So do you think this is a good lead to follow? I was thinking that even though the game could be running on an SSD, faulty hard disks in the system could be causing issues when they are polled.

Discovered the utility LatencyMon and ran a test whilst playing CS:GO and music in the background (WinAmp).

The game did have occasional FPS and audio stutters as usual but my WinAmp never produced noticeable audio stutter.
