I just finished building my computer (no graphics card yet, getting it tomorrow) and when I turn on the 750w power supply it turns on the green light on the z87 mother board, then nothing else. None of the LEDs' turn on, none of the fans, nothing. Just that little green light. I've gone threw one of linus' building tutorials a few times and I'm not seeing anything I missed. Could my power supply be faulty?

so everything is plugged in and has been checked that they are all plugged in all the way?

Turns out I had plugged the led, power switch and reset in on the wrong side.

The top fan and the back fan are now running. The processor fan and the two that are by the hard drive and ssd are still not running. The key bored and mouse won't turn on and I don't think the power supply fan is on either. What are the cables I'm supposed to use to make the other fans run? Also- I'm not receiving any picture while using the HDMI port on the mother board

Well, ever since I plugged the processor fan into "cpu fan" slot my computer turns on, the processor fan runs(also the back and top fans) and then I hear a 'errr' and it shuts the fans off and turns them back on and repeats. I put the Pfan back to what I had it before, turned it off and back on and it did the same thing.

do you have both the 20/24 pin connector and the 4 pin, i accidentally did not plug the 4pin in once in the past, and i had those same problems.

I don't see a slot for the 4 pin, there's a slot for an 8 pin top left of the board, is that the one you're referring to?

Turns out there's a 4pin and a sata slots right there. Are supposed to have things plugged into them? It's right below the top/front of the tower, where all the buttons and usb ports are.post-64437-0-59891400-1395965667_thumb.j

That is for the hotswap bay. Unnecessary to plug anything to it if you are not using the hotswap.

Can you give a whole photo of the pc you just assembled so we can identify what is wrong?

The fans in Corsair power supplies don't turn on when they aren't being stressed that much. Something tells me something isn't plugged in all the way.

I thought about that but then I remembered that the other corsair fan was on and running. But, the one that does run immediately does have an extender with what appears to be a chip in it that might be for being able to control the fan.

none of that is important. you seemd to have everything plugged in correctly. please double check again all the cables and see if they are properly plugged into the motherboard. you will see a small notch on the connectors make sure they are clipped in.

I doubt it is the psu since you said the case fan was spinning nicely before, but just in case, do you have any other psu to test out with?

Did you put any thermal paste on the cpu? How much did you put it? Did any of it spill into the cpu socket? The included thermal paste by coolermaster can be a little bit too runny/watery.

I may have put a little more than I should have. Would you suggest taking it off and reapplying it? If I did put too much and it got in the sockets what can I do?

Yes. It is worth trying. The best way to clean it is by using isopropyl alcohol (95%>). If it gets into the socket, try scraping it out gently with blunt pin/needle and a qtip around it. You can also roll a tissue and use the pointy tip to clean around the socket.Do not touch those pins.

I got all the fans to work. Three out of the four usb's on the top work. However there are two red lights on the motherboard, at first there were three or so flashing around the motherboard. One is where the Graphics card would be put and the other is at the USB 3 cable.

I think what was wrong is one or two of the cables weren't totally plugged in. I had moved some of the cables around to make it look a little less cluttery.

So it's working now correct?

Ignore the graphics card led. The one near the usb 3 is the boot device..Check all the connections to your hdd/ssd.sata and sata power cables are there. Can you go into the bios already? See whether those disks are detected by the motherboard or not.

bios says they're detected what temp should my cpu be at? And should I install my os to my hdd or ssd?

SSD, Your idle temps should be pretty low 30-40ish depending on ambient temperature.

Awesome! One last thing... my Asus dvd drive makes a TERRIBLE noise when it's closed, should I return it as defective? And before returning it if I do, should I upload the operating system using it?

Anything close to the ambient temp will do. Install your OS to the SSD. before that, go into the bios advance tab and change the hdd option to AHCI. And then make it the second boot device after the DVD-drive.

If it is useable, then install the OS first before sending it back for a replacement. unless if your have a spare dvd drive lying around.

I'm glad everything finally worked out and your pc is up and running. ;)

I set boot option 1 to the ssd and boot option 2 as the dvd drive. There is no boot option 3? Also I can't seem to find a way to make hdd to be AHCI.

yeah, i have only really worked with boards that have a 4 pin recently, so yeah, the 4/8pin.

Nothing to see here, move along

could I just unplug the HDD until I install the os to my SSD?
