I was replacing the thermal compound on a gigabyte wind force 1060 3gb the other day and noticed that it’s pcb had 2 more ram spots. This is most likely due to gigabyte using the same pcb for its counterpart 6gb model. Does anyone know if I could put 2 more ram chips in to upgrade it to a 6gb card and has anyone done anything like this?

While vram mods are possible and have been done before, its usually not worthwhile at all due to the tools you need to actually do it properly.

While it is possible its not really possible for your average consumer to do it. You have to have a very special set of tools as well as sourcing the right vram modules and then be competent enough to actually install the modules. Its not so easy as plug and play. The money spent on upgrading the vram would be much higher than simply buying a 6gb version of the 1060 or even getting a newer card.
