Good evening.

Would it be possible that my PSU has killed a brand new GPU and my Old GPU? I have a pretty old system which I bought years ago.
The first GPU it had: Msi GeForce GTX 1060 OC V1, 6GB GDDR5 (192 Bit), 2xHDMI, DVI, 2xDP
Died a while ago. System posted, GPU fans were spinning but no display.
Managed to get: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1660 OC 6GB GDDR5
Worked for few hours, Computer went to sleep and it died.
Same thing system posted, fans were not spinning on this one but again no display.

I hope i just got faulty GPU sent it back for warranty, but at this point  it's getting scary.
Do i need to look in to getting a new PSU?

Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 19041) (19041.vb_release.191206-1406)
Gigabyte GA-Z170-Gaming K3, Z170, DualDDR4-2133, SATA3, SATAe, HDMI, DVI, ATX
BIOS: BIOS Date: 03/10/16 11:28:05 Ver: 05.0000B (type: BIOS)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6600K CPU @ 3.50GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.5GHz
RAM Crucial Ballistix Sport LT 8GB 2400MHz CL16 1.2V

I would sooner think IF    the card was killed by means of power it would be from the board side vs the 12v connector side. It's not impossible to kill a gpu from a bad power supply just not very common for the power supply to ONLY kill a gpu while leaving the rest of the system functioning normally.

I'd at least try the gpus in another machine first to make sure they were actually killed vs your motherboard simply breaking to a point were the gpu's couldn't run on them. Don't forget the board has to actually work too for the gpu to work.

Welcome to the forums!!!

How old is your PSU exactly??? If you had this PSU longer than the warranty length, it is a good rule of thumb to replace the power supply if it is out of warranty.

It COULD be possible that it did ruin your graphics cards. If you can find another PSU and motherboard to test with, you can see. I should probably ask if you smelled smoke.

be Quiet! makes pretty reliable PSUs, but it all comes down to the models. Seasonic and EVGA has a whole slew of power supplies that are great and some that are really bad. There is always a chance something did let go inside OPs power supply that killed his GPUs. Even worse is if you use cables from another power supply model instead, as the pinout on the PSU side can be different from manufacturer to manufacturer; where lets say pin 1 on one EVGA model is 12V and pin 2 is ground, but on another EVGA model, it can be reversed, which can kill components.

At the time of building it, was not aware of looking into brands and qualities of them.
I did not smell smoke, but i heard a weird click noise then computer went to sleep.

Unfortunately i do not have an option to test it in  another system. Could it be that both PCIe slots became faulty at the same time? Rest of the system works fine now. Running on Onboard GPU.

Thank you for the welcoming
I bought this system in October,2016 which makes about 4,5 years for it.

The warranty length of this power supply is 3 years, so upgrading it to a better unit would be your best option. I would recommend you to check out our PSU Tier List where you can look at different PSU models you can pick from. Choose from at least Tier B or higher (Tier A) for your new PSU.

Thank you, will look into this.
Now i had a thought to change the PSU, my first "budgety" option was this Seasonic S12III 650 - Non-Modular PC Power Supply - 80 PLUS Bronze - 650 Watts
Which sits into TIER C list.

Do i need to change the motherboard as well? Just wondering how many or what to i need to replace for it not to happen again.

Thanks.

Just for your information, they have a spreadsheet for changes of the tier ratings and this power supply sits at Tier D. What budget do you have for a new PSU?

I'm skeptical that the motherboard was damaged in the process, but if you can try a graphics card that doesn't use additional power cables and just runs off of the PCIe power provided by the slot to see if the slots are good. Although you may not have a graphics card that doesn't require additional power. It's a tough call once you get a new PSU and graphics card installed.

well yes it's possible the board could be broken in such a way to prevent a gpu from working in it. Theres a chance a lower end gpu might not show the same problem though. Without cross referencing the parts you have with known working parts , it'll be very hard to diagnose.

Budget for PSU is about 65 to 75 USD. I would like to have at least 650 or 600 W as i want to finally overclock my CPU or is it too much for this kind of system?

The thing is it was working fine for 5ish hours. Had no problems whatsoever no overheating or anything.  The thing that happened was when the PC went to sleep mode then GPU just gave up.
I did send it back for warranty check, hope they do or get it working so i know for sure that i need to change something on my end. But taking into account that 2 GPUs has already "died" i will definitely change PSU ASAP.

I would go with the Corsair CX 650 for the power supply. If you had more room in your budget, a Corsair RM750 (slightly overkill for your build, but does come with a 10 year warranty and is 80+ Gold rated, if you care about efficiency ratings).
