First off I just want to say I play at 240hz and I prefer a high frame rate over graphics, I like to get as high as I possibly can when it comes to frames. Im currently playing at 1080p however I would like to also upgrade to 1440p 240hz and I don't think my 8700k will cut it.

My current choices are the 5950x, 11900k or 10900k.

I want to upgrade my cpu which is currently the i7 8700k, I wanted a more powerful cpu and I had a few questions about my current cpu and the newer ones I listed.

Do they run hotter than my 8700k? If I bought one of them would I have to buy a new cooler? My current cooler is a dark rock 4 not a pro though. Im not a fan of liquid cooling at all so I want to stay away from it & I never overclock.

Is it worth the upgrade or should I just keep my 8700k? People recommended it to me a while ago but no one talks about it anymore or recommends it, I mostly see 10900k or the 5000 series cards being recommended. Also I'm pretty sure it's discontinued so it's getting old.

One last thing, should I wait for ddr5 to upgrade? I'm thinking covid & scalpers won't be as much of an issue by then.

The 11900K hasn't exactly had a bunch of reviews of the performance yet, so there's not a great comparison against the Ryzen 9 5950X. As of Intel's 10th gen, Ryzen was faster, but 11th gen could be potentially be faster in this comparison.

Although, from what we do know about the 11700K, the performance might be so close together that the difference doesn't actually matter.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Do you honestly think you need a 16 core $800+ CPU?  Why not overclock?  It will help get you where you want.

What is the reasoning behind 1440p 240Hz?  What monitor are you using?

High refresh rate games are usually single core/thread so all the cores in the 5959X will not be doing much.

So between the 2 I would go for the i9 11900k.

An alternative would be a R7 5800X. That is what I bought to replace my i7 8086k(5hzhz 6 core).

Your i7 8700k on only worth keeping if it can do 5ghz all cores all the time.

Without 5ghz it can hardily feed your 3080 and if it can't do that get rid of it.

5950x for sure even if the 11900k is proven to be better(which i don't think seeing anand tech's review of the i7 11700k) in gaming the 5950x will have 8 more cores and 16 thread

Yeah it can't do that, I have it on turbo boost, when I compare it to other very similar builds its not hitting the frame rates that people are showing. I'm getting 130-140fps on cold war (low settings), someone I know that has a 2080ti 8700k, they're getting 170-185 on average without overclocking, same resolution and settings. It makes no sense to me, maybe it's just dying.

I would go with the 10900k because it is a 10 core instead of a 8 core that is the 11900k, it can also, if you win the silicon lottery, overclock to over 5.2 ghz with the proper cooling

Well I don't overclock also aren't faster cores better? Also wouldn't the 11900k be better for my 3080 because of pcie4?

Ok good point, but only some z490 boards support gen 4 I think, so you could go with a z590 board

Don’t take everything I say seriously

take it with a grain of s a l t

Base on the current situation, if I 8700K cannot fulfill your 240 FPS @1440P requirements, chances are neither 10900K 11900K or 5950X will. It really depends on the game, online games LOL, CSGO and Over Watch can run more than 300FPS and 1440 Ultra with RTX 3090, while PUGB can only be around 200FPS, and most triple A titles max out at 200 FPS and 1440P Ultra. It has nothing to do with CPU especially an 8700K is not consider obsolete when compare with a 11900K. And you probably barely notice any difference R7 5800X.Since at 1440P most games are GPU bonded.

It is best for you to wait until next year with PCIE 5 and DDR 5, which will result in a significant improvement for CPU performance. If you insisted to upgrade now, I suggest you at least wait until the end of the month which all 11900K benchmark will be out. And personally, I prefer 5950X because if you are going to sell it later down the road, people will be far more likely to buy it as a low end HEPT (which sounds strange), due to its multi core performance. Where as intel 11th generation will be its last 14++++ generation and will not be attractive in the used market at all. In 2022 both AMD and Intel will abandon their current CPU socket style, so it will mean no CPU upgrade is available in the future for AM4 and LA1200 Motherboards, which is another reason I think you should wait.

5950x for sure even if the 11900k is proven to be better(which i don't think seeing anand tech's review of the i7 11700k) in gaming the 5950x will have 8 more cores and 16 thread

Please back this up with reviews and benchmarks.  Let me know where the 5950x is touted as an amazing gaming CPU.
