Dear Forum,

I used to always have a minecraft server with my friends, and I used to join with my own IP.

Now recently my friends were telling me the server wasn't online when I did in fact start it up, I went to check on whatismyip.com and my IP completely changed and I have not a single clue on what went wrong, been troubleshooting for hours but I'm starting to lose hope I really hope someone can help me fix this.

This is what my IP changed to for some reason

Kind regards,
RijksDaalder

Public IP addresses for residential connections are subject to change. Normally people at home don't need a Static IP.

You can get around this issue by setting up Dynamic DNS. Look into No-IP. IIRC they offer a free domain name and their software can update the IP if it changes in the future.

Your IP will change at times unless you have a static IP address. You can look into DDNS services like @Windows7ge suggested to get around that.

My modem has been offline multiple times, sometimes for several hours at a time. I don't know.

Thanks, should have thought of that.

I used to know more about this, if I'm correct the IP that was previously displayed was my IPV6?
My server was joinable with my IPV4 and IPV6 adress

Now both of them in a cmd with ipconfig look really long "xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:x:xxxx:xxx:xxxx (as a reference)
Maybe this clears up the problem a little more.

It's up to the ISP's leisure. If you look in your router you might see your Public IP setup under DHCP. This could stay the same for a very long time but if your ISP ever needed to make a major network change they can and have been known to change the IP's given to network clients.

In my situation, where I live, with my ISP, my Public IP hasn't changed ever but I know it can if the ISP decides they need it to. Usually this doesn't change how your network interacts with the rest of the world. Chances are you would never notice unless you were hosting a service like OP.

Yeah, I use DHCP. I probably should be using DDNS, but I've never bothered setting it up in recent years. I do run a couple servers from my home. It doesn't apply to OP, so I'll refrain from derailing the thread.
