It's not bad at the time being similar to a 7900 GS, but it's only good for games of its time.

That is a G31 board my man, you’re way above the windows 98 compatibility window unless you’re putting a 775 northwood Pentium 4 on there, and even then there are no 98 drivers for that board

Even early pcie gpus don’t have full 98 support either, even if you put like a 6600 gt on there the few semi compatible drivers for windows 98 are barely functional.

You need to look at an older system for Windows 98. Either era hardware or top out at intel 900 series chipsets and nvidia fx. I’m talking early lga 775 and agp fx 5500/5700’s. Those are the last eras of hardware with mostly complete windows 98 support, but even that is hit and miss.

Uh, the max version of DirectX supported on Win98 SE is 9c.

You might want to look into the Unofficial 82.69 Nvidia driver though. But doubt it will work on bare metal for that card.

https://toogam.com/software/archive/drivers/videodrv/mswinvid/nvidia/unoffici/nv8269.php

Win98 will run as a VM however (only in Intel CPUs as it's broken with AMD Ryzen), but GPU gaming will suck regardless.

Note: If you're going to play retro games on Windows 98 SE, you'll need retro hardware due to chipset and GPU support.

for a Windows 98 machine I'd think more Pentium II/III or Athlon with a Voodoo 3 or TNT2, maybe a Voodoo 5 or GeForce 256 for a real high-end system.

That board and card would do well for an XP gaming system tho.

Gigabyte G1 GA-970-SLI ~ FX 8320 @ 3.3Ghz, 1212mV ~ 16GB DDR3 ~ Radeon 570 4GB ~ 512GB NVMe ~ 2x 1TB HGST 7200RPM

Pretty much what was said above, if you want to do windows 98 things, you need windows 98 hardware. Because building these dedicated systems can only get you so far, and virtualization is also a little iffy sometimes.

I’m telling you from experience that if you’re only in a motherboard and gpu right now, you need to scrap that idea and use the hardware for that type of build. Because it’s going to be a hassle and it’s not worth it.

You don’t build a modern PC today to put windows 7 on it.

You should be looking at socket 478, 423, 462 or older like 370 or slot 1/A for windows 98.

Geforce 2/3/4 or ATI Rage, Voodoo 2/3, etc. You can go cheap with this or get really expensive with it, but hardware that’s nearly a decade newer than 98 is not the way to go.

well i already got the mb and cpu so... if not and it fails i can probably re sell it.

i spent a long time looking at 775 mb and i wanted an e8600 and all of them dont have 98 driver maybe lan. but in that video he didnt install any drivers and it works fine so

ya can get mb that are 775 with 98 driver but you wont have an e8600 cpu. maybe that dose not matter i no 98 only uses 1 core so maybe a single fask core would be better? i dont no.

if i was going to use pcie mb with e8600 i would need like 2 or 3 pci slots for sound card, lan, and maybe sata.

i do own a 6800 ultra agp but no agp mb.

all voodoo cost too much and the ones i did have i sold a few years ago...
