Hi... i'm not really good with networking stuff... all I've been able to do so far is buy a 3rd party router and stream videos from my pc to my phone via VLC...

Earlier today we had no internet and I wanted to watch some content on my phone but VLC won't open the SMB folder for some reason... it just keeps on loading... It's working fine now that the internet is back...

Why is this happening? I can still browse and watch the files through FTP... only VLC is dead when the internet is down...

Is there a setting to fix this? Or is it just how VLC works...
I want to watch on VLC because it's the only player (that I know atleast) that automatically enables subtitles...
If you know any better players (aside from MX) pls do comment...

If you could watch anything that wasn’t locally stored the internet wasn’t down.  If you were trying to view stuff that wasn’t locally stored and the internet was down of course nothing would work. It sounds like you wanted to watch something locally stored while the internet was down but the way you have VLC set up it checks the internet first and if the internet is broken it times out.  It at least used to be you could set vlc to look for things locally first.  I’m many versions out of date though and things might have changed

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

VLC at least the desktop version doesn't require an active internet connection to use but it's possible the mobile app does.

It could also possibly be dependent on your Default Gateway IP which depending on how exactly you lost internet could cause it to not work.

How do you connect to your SMB share? Do you use a hostname or IP address?

SMB is a funny thing, you can usually avoid strange issues by using the IP address rather than the PC name.
