Can't boot in Windows/Linux - Nvidia 780 Ti

vinid223

Hello everyone,

I have an old 780 TI that I replaced a year or more ago by a 2070 Super because the 780 Ti seems to have stopped working.

But after a while enjoying the 2070S, I still want to figure out what is going on with the 780 Ti. I know it's not a flashy card, it's old and everything, but you know I am curious.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I am thinking about it because I can post and boot into the bios with the card. I can see the Windows loader, but as soon as the loader is done, everything is black, the machine is not responsive and I need to force the shutdown.

The weird thing is that, when I changed the 2070s for the 780ti in the mobo to test, the bios told me that the VGA device is not recognize or not supported and CSM was enabled.

I can get into the Windows 10 "Recovery" menu if that helps.

For now I assume it is a dead GPU, but if any of you have an idea, known issues or more ways to "debug" it. I am all ears.

Hek, I can even send it to you if it is something you like to try. (You need to have a good reputation here for me to do that though).

It could also be a stupid video idea for LTT to try to fix it 🤣

I raise my virtual hat to any of you who read this. Have a great day.

Is Windows installed as MBR or GPT?
Kepler cards don't have the UEFI BIOS things to support a UEFI boot, and while I might be wrong, it may not play nicely with a GPT install of Windows.

I have Kepler cards myself and I have CSM enabled and an MBR install of Windows with no problems.

Could be a driver issue. Install the 2070S, and use a program called Display Driver Uninstall (DDU) to remove all traces of display drivers. Yes you will need to reinstall the 2070S drivers and may lose your Geforce settings. When it is done, shut down, unplug the 2070S, plug in the 780 Ti, disconnect the internet, and see if you can get any further. If you can't, then i'm sorry for wasting your time, and try to revert all the steps so that you are back to the 2070S with all of the drivers installed. Also FakeKGB sounds like a way more interesting solutions. You can check what your windows drive is installed as by right clicking C:/ in Disk Management and clicking properties. When you find a tab that is mostly blank, and a button that says something along the lines of "Populate rows" and you can then check through the lines till you see it mention either MBR or GPT

Fuck you scalpers, fuck you scammers, fuck all of you jerks that charge way too much to tech-illiterate people.

Unless I say I am speaking from experience or can confirm my expertise, assume it is an educated guess.

@FakeKGBI do have a GPT partition for my Windows installation. I could try a new machine with MBR.

I'd do that. Working with older hardware can be tricky, so trying an MBR Windows install might work.

@Nathanpete I did try that in the past before buying the 2070s when troubleshooting the 780ti. I will try FakeKGB idea. It makes sense.

You don't need to try a new machine. If you have another disk laying around, that should be enough. Format it as MBR, enable CSM on your bios and then do a new windows install to it.

@FakeKGB @Nathanpete @igormp

An update for you guys. I was able to do the intallation process of Windows on an other drive that I formated to MBR.

I went as far as the desktop. But along the way, I had to unplug the displays and replug it because I was loosing picture. After that, as soon as I installed the Nvidia driver, everything went black and I could not boot the computer again. Even the BIOS was not showing, the lights on the motherboard seemed to be stuck.

I power it down and plug the 2070s and it boot just fine into the new Windows installation.

I guess at this point this mean this GPU is just dead if it is blocking the BIOS to boot.

Thanks again for your help.

If you connect the 2070S as your display card, and the 780 Ti as a secondary card, what does Device Manager and GPU-Z report about the 780 Ti?

That happened to me with a 280x, I reballed it in my oven and it worked for another couple months until it started failing again.

Yeah, I'm not going to put it in the oven 🤣

I will try it later today. I'll keep you posted

I just realised something funny. The Windows installer forces the installer to reconvert the disk to GPT when selecting the disk. I did not realised that after installing. So this still migh be the reason why it is doing this.

I'm gonna need to check on how to force the installer to use MBR. -_-
