RAM confusion

Guest

Why is my RAM shorter than the slot on my motherboard? Should I be concerned? Or is it because my RAM GHz is lower than my motherboards cap maybe?

Can you show a photo of what you're talking about, plus tell us the model number of your motherboard and memory?

It wouldn't be weird if your memory is shorter than your motherboard's slot, since the memory needs to fit in that slot, but I have a difficult time imagining what you're exactly talking about.

A picture would help in this situation too, because there is a chance - if the memory is significantly smaller than the slot - that you bought SODIMM memory, which is laptop memory and much smaller than desktop memory.

the physical size of ram is not based on speed, unless you're talking about an extremely fast memory kit that requires a large heat sink to cool it

half size dimms are common for really cheap memory kits, although I don't believe I've seen any for DDR4. (I'm sure they're out there somewhere)

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Is there some kind of adapter or something? I really don't want to spend another 50 dollars on RAM

There are adapters, but you'd be spending 30 USD in adapters (assuming you have two sticks of memory), while you should just return this memory and get the correct stuff.

I have 1 stick, can you link me the adapter? I am not a fan of Amazon returns.

You won't be spending more money if you return the wrong RAM and buy the proper RAM. Don't get an adapter, get the right part.

I am in no way recommending these adapters, as I am unsure of their capabilities, but this looks like a SODIMM DDR4 adapter: https://www.amazon.com/Laptop-DDR4-Desktop-Adapter-Converter/dp/B07FFW1CZD/

But again, I am 100% not recommending this. Return the improper product you bought and get the memory made for a desktop computer.

But it's your free choice to go with the proper solution vs. going for a janky adapter which may just work, or may just not work.

The thing is, I am not sure if my packaging is in good enough condition to return.

Did you shred it or something? If you can't return it for some reason then I'd recommend selling it yourself to someone who needs it for a laptop. That's a lot easier than dealing with adapters.

Package had a bad design, you need to cut the sticker to get to the RAM.

The label on the plastic casing? That doesn't matter at all.

You can always take it to a Kohls if you are near one.

I know, its just that I did an amazon return a few weeks ago, and still haven't been refunded yet. I don't think I want to trust it again.

That's understandable, personally I'd return it. But it's up to you
