Frustrated with FreeNas and need help... Unable to update Freenas (Solved), Unable to expand the volume and now encryption issue...

Hello and thanks for looking.

I am stuck, stuck on 11.2 U6 and stuck unable to extend my volume.

Followed the instructions in the 11.2 manual the download link took me to  TrueNAS-12.0-U2.1-manual-update http://download.freenas.org/latest/

I run this and get ( see Image 1) this on the screen connected to the Freenas box. In the Web Gui it hangs on Applying update 67% till I close the updating window.

I am trying to add 4 more 8TB drives and am having issues with volume manager and expanding it but I thought I would get started with the updating problem.

The update is failing because FreeNAS cannot connect to the update server - [Error 51] Network Is Unreachable.

Are you sure the machine has an internet connection?

To my knowledge yes, I can't think of any reason it would not have access. Considering I downloaded the update and am running a manual update pointing at the file downloaded from the link I provided I didn't think the connection to the server would be necessary. I was thinking my version being as old as it is the information for the server to connect to is no longer valid or now has a new address. No clue how to fix that. I used to be able to access the update server in the GUI and I could see updates available and EVERY time I tried to update that way it would fail. So I just let it go till now.

I did some Googling. The reason it is trying to download from the internet is because it needs the latest CRL file. A CRL file is a "Certificate Revocation List", its a list of all digital certificates that have been revoked by the issuer and its important so FreeNAS can ensure nothing its trying to install has had its digital certificate pulled.

In all cases I can find of this error it turned out to be incorrect network settings, in most of them it was a bad DNS address. Try changing the DNS to 8.8.8.8 and see if that helps.

Can I ask why your default DNS differs from your Gateway? Are you running something like PiHole?

Try changing NameServer1 to 192.168.50.1 so its talking directly with your Gateway.

Thats pretty weird, I mean FreeNAS obviously has internal network access since you're accessing the webgui.

A few questions, what is the IP address of the FreeNAS box? What is the IP address of your router?

Can you ping the router from FreeNAS's terminal?

It shouldn't really be required but after changing the Nameserver have you rebooted the box?

OK well at any rate challenge 1 complete!!! Thanks for the help. perhaps we can swing back around to the connectivity issue later.

Next up!!! Add 4 8TB drives to a Dev and connect it to the existing pool of 1 dev consisting of 4 8TB drives.

So if all goes smooth soon I will have 40 total TB of storage in ZFS1. (I think ZFS1 is the term, it's the one where with 4 disks I can lose one form the dev)

Anyway I'll post and let you know.

Everything with Freenas is a headache. SO, I started to expand the pool and got stopped by my dataset being in the pool. So I moved it to the USB drive.

Solved that error. Then at it again and had an issue with passphrase. Had it saved as to what I was going to set it to but never did so it was not working.

So I re-downloaded the Encryption key and created a passphrase. Solved that issue and was able to lock the pool to begin expansion. Then I got the error for the photo below.

So I opened terminal and ran the command as requested. I get and invalid argument about the size 7999415648256. So blocked again and I have yet to figure this out...

AND on top of it not the pool is locked and the passphrase nor the Key file will unlock it!!!!! LOL I'm going to bed, I'll be back in 6-ish hrs. to try suggestions...

The best advice I can give you is go sign up here - https://www.truenas.com/community/forums/freenas-help-support.2/ - and ask for help from the community but you should be very careful in how you proceed. Data loss is a real possibility with this one, make sure the person offering advice knows what they're saying is correct.

Copy that, I'll give them a shout.

I'm not a goof, the real important stuff I have saved on disconnected HDD's. The only loss would be the time to RE-Rip 13TB of blu-rays and some minor data.
