Following my purchase of a RT-AX86U based on overwhelming reviews, i am very underwhelmed by the results. The speed that i get out of the modem is roughly 500mbps. However, when i attempt to connect to the wifi with my Wifi6 capable motherboard, i only get roughly 40mbps download and 0.5mbps upload. If anyone knows a solution, please help. There is some obstruction between the router and my computer, however it should not influence the speeds nearly as much as it does right now.

You’d be surprised. What is it? Any other electrical appliances or sources wireless interference in the area (e.g. microwaves, refridgerators, cordless phones, Bluetooth)?

Are you running the WiFi speed tests while connected to the 2.4GHz or the 5GHz signal?

Run a wireless survey using WiFi Analyzer (download free from the MS Store) and post the channel output from the ‘Analyze’ page for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies.

Also, while you’re at it, post your wireless settings. Hide any passwords.

@Arctifire

Your 2.4GHz frequency is crap. It’s very congested. Don’t expect much if you’re connecting to the 2.4GHz frequency. You can do a few optimizations to make it more bearable...

  • Set the wireless channel to 20MHz to avoid overlap with other neighbourhood WiFi.

With regards to the 5GHz radio, why do you have the wireless mode as ‘AX only’? Do you not have any WiFi-5/AC devices? Remember, even WiFi-6 clients are backward compatible with WiFi-5 access points. If you can help it, set the mode to AC/AX, force channel bandwidth of 80MHz and disable use of DFS channels (some clients can’t see DFS channels well).

Since you have Smart Connect disabled, the router won’t try to force clients onto the frequency with the best quality connection. So it’s up to you to tell clients which SSID to connect to. When you’re close to the router, use 5GHz; further away, use 2.4GHz.
