Can't access Internet

Go to solution Solved by ross06187,

I am sorry to tell you that you have bought the wrong type (well not wrong just not ideal)

you have a ADS connection over a phone line.

you have wireless box that you would normally uses with a Cable (different type of connection from ISP).  This does not mean you cant use the router above.  The modem is a key part of your network and it might be the component causing the issues for you.

I would say you need to connect the Wan to Wan port.

Failing that you will need to get in to the setting of the wireless box and turn of DHCP so that the modem (one with ADSL port) give out the IP's on the network.  (this is getting technical)

What you ideally need is

http://www.asus.com/Networking/DSLN66U/

However if your modem is good (adsl box) then what you have will be fine.

Will getting a new ADSL modem improve you internet speed.  well it depends, you internet speed is limited by the condition of you phone line.  you cant relay do anything about this, but some modems can deal with more interference than others.

you can see your connection speed to your isp in the setting of the modem.

When your talking about be able to access network devices, they should all be connected to the furthest box from the wall ether on wan or WiFi.  you should be plugging anything in to the Ethernet ports on the modem if you using a external WiFi box.  you may need to put the modem box into WAN mode.

Hi :)

FIrst of all; I'm not very experienced in the field of networking, so I'm sorry if you get frustrated because of my low level of understanding.

The issue:

I bought a new router (RT-U66N Dark Knight from ASUS), because I have been experiencing very unstable and not very fast internet from my Inteno DG150. When I connect the WAN of the RT-U66N to the ISP's cable (the one coming out from the wall) I am able to connect my computer to the Network/ SSID. Now this is the part where I get confused: setting up the router. I don't know what most settings mean or do, but I generally just clicked 'Next'. However, when I try to open www.google.com for example it says that I'm not connected to the internet/ that the ethernet port is not connected. I don't understand this, the cable from the wall to the WAN port is connected. I tried setting up the router and connecting to the internet with an ethernet cable from the router to PC and without (wireless setup), but ran into the same issues. I think that it might be because I don't think I have a modem, I have a phone-box-thing, where the phone i connected to and connected to a LAN port on the old router (DG150). I think that the DG150 might have been a router and a modem, but the RT-U66N is just a router. I need a modem right? If I do what would be a good one?

Thanks for helping and making me less confused :)

your ISP is supposed to provide you with a modem
that basically takes the 4 pin telephone cable and allows you to connect to the internet through it

a router is not a modem

if you have a modem then you dont need a router unless you want more wireless range or other features
what you could try to do is if the instability youre experiencing is the wireless connection from your DG150, then you can wire your new router to the DG150 with an ethernet cable and use the wireless from the new router

did you originally purchase the DG150 or was it given to you by your ISP?

Ok, your current setup is the following, right?

  Wall -> [WAN Port] RT-U66N [LAN/WLAN] -> [LAN/WLAN] Your PC -> No internet :(

A working setup would be:

  Wall -> [WAN Port] Inteno DG150 [LAN Port] -> [WAN Port] RT-U66N [LAN/WLAN] -> [LAN/WLAN] Your PC -> Hopefully Internet

Since the RT-U66N hasn't got a build-in ASDL2+ modem. It wouldn't fix your Internet issues, if their really dependent on the DG150(Which is unlikely)

You could just buy a ADSL2 modem, and replace the DG150 with it, in the lower setup. You would need to have config of the old one though, to get it working.

I would suggest, trying to find the Issue in the network first:

One way would be to continuously ping your router, and a google server for reference. You could then watch, where the "Network" gets lost: If the router doesn't answers, the router is broken, and you would need a new one. Since you already got a router, you would need a new modem. If the google servers dosn't respond, there are 2 possibility's:

The modem part in the router is broken, Can happen sometimes, you need a new ADSL2+ modem.

Something ISP related is going wrong: Your side works, try calling their Technical Service or something. You cant really do anything against it.

@C0V413NT:

Dialup doesn't exists anymore! Also, if you google DG150, you will find out that it's a ADSL2+ modem...

I got it from my ISP, and what you suggested worked :)

Do you have dialup? And could you possibly take a picture of the cable coming out of the wall?

I don't know what a dialup is, but here is the picture (the cable says CAT.5 and comes from the wall and connects to the DSL port of the DG150): 6DpPJed.jpg

So I had it set up like this (before the RT-U66N): Wall -> [DSL] Inteno DG150 [WLAN/LAN] -> [WLAN/LAN] PC

I tried this with the RT-U66N and I got internet access: Wall -> [DSL] Inteno DG150 [WAN or LAN (both work)] -> [WAN] RT-U66N [WLAN/LAN] -> [WLAN/LAN] PC (The Wall cable has to go into the DSL port, I can access the Network, but not the Internet if it is in the WAN port of the DG150)

I get Internet from the DG150 and the RT-U66N when I do the setup above (same internet speed as before though, 14ms Ping, 10-11Mbps Download and 0.9 Upload  <_< ) Would buying another modem instead of the DG150 improve internet speed? Here is a picture of the working setup with the RT-U66N: 7dGQFsc.jpg

I don't know if I should use the WAN or LAN port on the DG150 to connect to the RT-U66N, but thanks for the help :)

Hi, thanks for the help!

I didn't understand it all, but I have an ADSL internet broadband, a ADSL2+ modem/roouter (DG150) and the RT-U66N (just router) so if I bought the DSL-N66U (modem router) I could replace the DG150 and RT-U66N? Does an ADSL broadband with an ADSL2+ modem router (DG150) create any disadvantages or is it fullt compatible? Also do you mean I should disable the DHCP Server on the RT-U66N (router) and leave it on on the modem router (DG150)?

think of it like this:

WAN = in

LAN = out

That does make sense ;) Thanks

I had a look though the quick stat guide

http://www.intenogroup.com/Portals/0/IntenoFiles/ProductDocs/4/732/Quickguide_DG150.pdf_20131203160655.pdf

The wan port on the DG150 looks to be so you can attach a cable modem to the DG150, it also looks like it has wifi built in.

so you should connect Ethernet to Ethernet no WAN ports.  on the RT-U66N turn of DHCP.  That way the DG150 will control the addresses.  (it turns the RT-U66N into a switch with wifi)

why are you using the RT-U66N is it just for WiFi? as the manual has the DG150 down with WiFi.  if the DG150 is not very good using in the above way wont help as its still having it do all the heavy lifting on the network.

Cool, I actually tried it, but still didn't see any better performance and I'm still 4-5 times a day when the Internet won't work for 5 minutes (annoying when gaming), so I think I'm going to buy a modem router (DSL-N66U from ASUS) to replace the DG150 and the RT-U66N... which should solve some issues :)

Thanks anyway for the help... pretty sure I know how it all works now thanks to you guys! :)
