What is the difference between the GIGABYTE Z390 D and the GIGABYTE Z390-UD motherboards?

The vrm configuration is different, and it looks like the Z390 UD has better VRM's with better cooling, the 1st PCIE x16 slot on the UD is also reinforced while the D is just plain plastic. It also looks like the D only has an 8 pin cpu power connector while the UD has an 8 pin cpu plus an additional 4 pin for additional power. Otherwise they're pretty much the same, at least just from looking at the board.

One has the D, the other has the Ultra D.

Aerocool DS are the best fans you've never tried.
