Yea HPE was on a bit of a buying spree for a little while there, but most of the things they brought I highly agree with, like Aruba, Cray and SGI.

Aruba and SGI yes but Cray no way. HPE bought Cray mainly for Slingshot as Mellanox was bought by Nvidia. But little do people know Cray was months away from declaring bankruptcy and was years behind on fulfilling customers orders. They had dozens of HPCs that were all hooked up and ready to go on site but they couldn't get the software to work so they have just been sitting for up to 2 years. Which also means they were paying massive penalties for being late. Also referring back to Slingshot internal testing actually got preexisting hardware to speeds within 17% of Slingshot so it's sort of a wash. HPE did get a lot of good software from Cray though like their custom linux kernels that have massive performance increases for HPC use

I'm not surprised by that, I'm sure intels delay on 10nm hurt cray at lot given that had at least 1/2 a dozen DOE contracts that were built on ether next gen phi or much faster serer chips

Our last system before our yet to be installed was 2015.
Software seems to be HPE big issue right now which given thats result of cray I'm not surprised

I just like Cray as a company, so I don't mind that HPE had to take on a lot a problems with acquiring them, not my problem. But them being under HPE makes them and their technology more accessible to me :old-smile:
