Sata to 4-pin EATX12V?

MadCharger

Hi!

Upgrading my PC and ran in to a potential issue. My PSU (Corsair CV550) does not have a EATX12V connector. I got a 8-pin connected to the MB and in the manual it said 1 8-pin or 8 pin + 4-pin so that should work out. The PSU have 3 additional cables for sata/molex that is not used at this point. Could I use an adapter to use the three of them to power the 4-pin EATX12V or will this risk damage to the MB or PSU?

As far as I understand the 8-pin can deliver 235W, 2x6-pinxPCI-E 150W, 3xSata/molex 162W which is 547W in total. That makes sense in a 550W PSU. A 4-pin EAXT12V is specified to supply 155W so using the three Sata/Molex in combination should be able to support that.

Am I right or does my not that superior trick me in to do something stupid?

Why do you use a groupregulated budget psu when you need that much power? Get a decent units that comes with the connectors you need. Working with sata/molex and that kind adapters is asking for problems.

What cpu, motherboard and gpu do you use?

Plug in the 8 pin and leave the 4 pin empty. Don't stuff about trying to adapting SATA cables.

If you're using a CPU that actually needs more than a single 8-pin EPS for power, then you probably shouldn't be using a CV550.

What components are you using, exactly?

And no, don't use random SATA/Molex adapters that do more harm than good.

Ok, cool! It said in the MB manual it's ok with only the 8-pin but since I got all the unconnected stuff I thought I would at least ask.

I will get a new PSU in a few months or so when I can afford it and after that it's hopefully time for a gpu if the market calms down a bit.
