Hello

I recently switched out my CPU cooler and have killed my PC, I took out the CPU to clean it properly and got some thermal paste on the bottom of the proccessor and in the socket. I cleaned them both to the best of my ability but now nothing turns on, I'm assuming it's the CPU as the motherboard still accepts power and lights up. The board is the ROG Strix b450-f gaming about 5 months old and the CPU is the ryzen 3600 about 1½ years old.

So have I killed the PC?

All responses will be appreciated 🙂

Edit:. I left it airing out whilst I slept and was at work and everything works now. I had bent some of the pins but somehow managed to bend them back without breaking everything.

Thanks for all the suggestions you've really helped me out. Plus you've beaten Reddit, I asked both of you the same question and they never even responded.

Thanks once again

Leon

What cooler do you have? (or rather what type, is it like the clamp-on type or screw-in type?)

Thermal paste isn't conductive, so I highly doubt you cooked anything. But because it's non-conductive, if there is any left on the CPU pins or mobo contacts, it could be preventing those from making contact, which would be why the mobo powers on but the PC doesn't do anything. Did you double and triple check that none got into the tiny PGA socket holes?

I would try and un-mount the cooler and take out the CPU, and (of course this is assuming you have enough thermal compound) re-install the CPU in the socket and the cooler on top of that. Make sure there is enough clamping force (although that's not a huge issue with it being AM4). Otherwise, re-seat the memory.

Also when the MB does come on do lights do any sort of pattern or anything? usually (if the MB isn't bad) it will give an error code through flashing or color changing the lights.

It has the same ugly rgb as always flashing

I did get some in the pga holes but cleaned it same as the cpu pins

Also reseating the ram did nothing

Are there any small LEDs at the top right of the MB?

Possibly, but you will have to make sure it isn't something else first. Are you sure it was 100% Isopropyl alcohol?

Even then if you even missed a little in your socket, Isopropyl alcohol is very conductive. How long did you wait between cleaning the socket any putting the CPU back in it?

About 2-3 minutes the alcohol had dried, also i thought ipa wasnt conductive? I clean all my console boards and gpu with it and have never had issues with stuff not turning back on

To tell you the truth, I learned the hard way. I thought the same until I recently basically soaked a keyboard in Isopropyl alcohol and killed it. Take a look at this article

"Alcohol (isopropyl alcohol, ethanol and isopropanol) is a polar solvent (very conductive) and is potentially corrosive (contains water). Not recommended as a carrier solvent."

Ahh, so which out the 2 then it's busted? The mobo or cpu? Or both?

I don't know about "busted" as of yet. I would try to remove the CPU from the socket and everything else from the MB and just let it dry for 24 hours or more to make sure that it is all dry. Then you would also be able to see if it had something to do with mounting pressure as well. 🙂

Isopropyl Alcohol is a conductive solvent. It eats away at certain materials in the plastic/vinyl categories which is why you'll hear people say 70% for some applications (and medical because it takes time for it to kill germs and work its way deeper). Higher purity iso is only used over 70 because it dries faster. I've heard people say to use the high grade because its not conductive because no water, but its still conductive so moot point. the 70 is much more gentle but will take longer to clean the paste off so its totally dependent as to which to use. Do you have pictures of the cpu and mobo? Bent pins?

If you have issues after that, mention me and I can try to help further. (Also, I forgot to mention that the keyboard that I "cleaned" was fine after a week or so of drying. I thought it was dead at the time and tried multiple times plugging it in to see if it works. Hopefully in your case if it were to do with the Isopropyl alcohol, it would just be a crossed connection and nothing would be fried.)
