What happened to my HTPC AIO?

Since a few months ago I keep hearing weird noises when turning ON my HTPC (using a SilverStone Technology SST-SG13B-V2 ITX case with a Cooler Master MasterLiquid Lite 120 AIO), but it performed mostly fine (CPU Temps at 70 Max). After a few years of use, I decided to change the thermal paste, and to my surprise, I found this mess.

 

Is this a case of water cooling failing? Do I need to replace it? Should I try again with an AIO or go with a low profile air cooler?

 That Aio has been known to leak iirc. I would replace it if possible. 

I am NOT a professional and a lot of the time what I'm saying is based on limited knowledge and experience. I'm going to be incorrect at times.

Consider yourself extremely lucky. It leaked and your system survived. Definitely replace that.

It looks like the CPU block / pump cracked open...

It is CLEAR that fluid has leaked out otherwise, you shouldn't be seeing ANY of the staining and oxidation / corrosion.

From the markings, Ryzen 1700(X) ?

If it's a HTPC, I'd just get a new (low profile) air cooler.

Yes, it's a Ryzen 1700, any recommendations for a low profile air cooler? the Wraith Stealth Cooler barely fits and temps are very high (90+).

Do you have a regular ATX power supply, or a SFX power supply in your HTPC right now?

That extra ~11mm clearance, should give you a few extra options.

61mm is pretty tight, buuuut.....

 

Scythe Shuriken 2

Users seem happy with this on their Ryzen 2700 / 2700X.

Height including fan is 58mm.

 

Noctua NH-9Li

Noctua states it will be fine with a Ryzen 1700 / 1700X, given that you have decent case airflow.

You will also need their AMD AM4 mounting kit -- which Noctua can ship to you for free.

Height including fan is 37mm.

 

The Cryorig C7 / C7G / C7 Cu are also great coolers.

For some reason, PCPartPicker is only showing me $80+ price options...

Height including fan is 47mm.
