If you want a more accurate way of seeing your actual FPS when your record, use dxtory. You can play at your usual frames albeit at 5 - 10 frames lower and be recording at whatever FPS you want :) Both Fraps and dxtory need to bought though.

Msi Afterburner has an OSD which can overlay gpu temps, fan speeds, core/mem clocks and of course your fps. It's also a decent and FREE overclocking program.

What? Are you sure? I got FRAPS installed for free, there's a paid version which allows more functionality, but if it's basic framerate counter and abilty to capture a screenshot (but only in bmp format), then FRAPS work just fine.

Most game actually have a fps-counter inside the game. Most of the steam games does have that.

 

Other than that i would recommend is:

 

Action! (Mirillis) I use this personally, i like it because you get perfect quality with close to no fps-loss like dxtory and fraps have :/ It does not work in all games like for example Minecraft xD

DxTory It works great but you could just search for "Jackfrags dxtory" on youtube and he will show you good settings that makes it work easily.

Fraps It's the most used program that you ALWAYS find on the internet, it works for most game but it uses a lot of hdd-storage.
