is it overkill?

No. Definitely not overkill @iCoNrant. Not sure who gave you that idea.

Or maybe I do know: people on the forums who love telling other people what they "don't need" and what is "overkill".

Good cooling = a nice happy chip with headroom to boost/overclock + quiet operation.

Before anyone decides to reply to my comment: I do realize everything depends on the type of CPU and, of course, the budget. However, considering the OP has a 5800X I think a NH-D15 is more than appropriate and really doesn't need justification, in my opinion. Good cooling is ALWAYS a good investment (excluding exotic custom loops, etc. due to point of diminishing returns).

I mean.. unless you like your chip running hot and your computer sounding like a General Electric GE90 high-bypass turbofan engine.

But to answer your question, both will be fine @iCoNrant.
