Why is 4.4mm 5 pull

Like @Tigerleonstated, the 5th pole is a shielding pole. However on most devices it isn't actually connected anywhere.

 

It was originally added as the 4.4mm balanced connector is designed to be a more robust version of the 2.5mm balancec connector.

 

4.4mm is designed to be the best of both worlds. Not as fragile as 2.5mm, but not as bulky as a full on 4 pole XLR connector.

Main speaker setup is now;

 

Mini DSP SHD Studio -> 2x Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC's (fed by AES/EBU, one feeds the left sub and main, the other feeds the right side) -> 2x Neumann KH420 + 2x Neumann KH870

 

(Having a totally seperate DAC for each channel is game changing for sound quality)
