microphone clips when clapping

hello i have my gain at a level that im fine with when im talking or talking loudly. when im talking it doesn't clip even if im talking loudly but if i clap the microphone clips (well it doesn't clip fully my interface says it is pre clipping but im not sure what that means) is this normal or should i turn my gain down a bit.

Quite normal. Claps can be very loud.

Dont have to turn the gain down. Depends if you want the claps to be heard well.

If it didn't clip when you clapped (without a compressor) I would be quite impressed....
