I know people probably post this same kind of thing every single day but I've noticed that my entire system, from gaming, to just opening chrome, is very slow. I've been on a bit of a crusade to speed up the computer, and I recently joined this forum to help with things, and I've made a couple other posts before about slow games and my new monitor seeming to slow down my games, but I wanted to make a general post about my whole PC being slow since it's been that way for a while.

I've had my computer for 4 years now and I can't remember if it's always been this slow but I know one thing's for sure and that's that it's slow right now. I can't have cookie clicker open for longer than 15 minutes without having to wait 30 seconds for each input to go through. It's my family computer, so it's loaded with garbage but I'm not sure if that's why it's slow since my storage isn't really that full.

I've tried to speed up this computer for the past 2~ weeks and I've had pretty much no luck at all. This forum has been pretty helpful with knowledge of computer stuff recently though so I thought I'd give it a shot.

My specs are:

Case: Dell Inspiron 3847

CPU: Intel i3-4170

GPU: Intel HD 4400

RAM: 8GB DDR3

Storage: 1TB HDD, filled up with about 250GB

PSU: 300w

Motherboard: 088DT1

I usually have about 80-100 background processes running at a time and my CPU temperature is usually around 50c-75c

I'm just kind of b-raging because I can't hit over 40FPS on minecraft and can't hit over 40FPS on even phantom forces on roblox when I used to be able to play both of these at 50-60 consistently.

And as I said before, google chrome takes absolute millennia to open and I can't even play cookie clicker for longer than a couple minutes before it starts slowing down severely.

I also recently changed from a 720p 60hz monitor to a 1080p 120hz monitor and it seemed to kind of tank my FPS in most games, now the only game that I can really run at a consistent framerate is terraria.

Tell me if you need any other information and thank you in advance for any help!

* Easiest upgrade is RAM add another 8

* Add an SSD for just the OS and format from scratch

* Keep your HDD for the games

* Add a real GPU, something along the line of a 1060

* As you CPU research is need to find what is supported, i am pretty sure you can go with an i5

* de-bloat windows - kill telemetry - stop unnecessary services

I'd say debloating windows and expecting less from the machine would be the two free things you can do.

If the machine has gone a long time without anyone maintaining the system software then yeah it could be pretty much running tons of programs and windows updates stacked on top of each other that make the machine almost unuseable. The machine from a hardware standpoint might not be too bad if the OS was healthier.

What things can I get rid of to debloat windows? And yeah, this is a pretty old computer and it's not been cleaned out physically once, the closest thing we do to maintaining it is running CCleaner.

Well without diving into it I'd just reinstall windows and check out some of the "decrapify" tutorials on youtube. They have a lot of scripts that can be run to remove a lot of things automatically.

But if you don't know much about computers or windows you may want to have someone more knowledgeable do it for you.

I think your tasks of "playing minecraft and cookie clicker and running chrome" should 100% need a hardware upgrade yet. Thought he system probably could use any form of gpu and ssd by now.

Do you have a budget ?

Well I think we've settled on buying a new computer once this one completely dies, I was just mostly wanting to know if there's anything I can do to speed it up without any new hardware since it'll be worthless to dump cash into stuff on this computer. Would a new computer run things better?

Since I'll be getting a new computer sometime this year, would things run better if everything was new? I'm assuming the answer is probably just a simple yes, but I want to make sure.

well to be honest if the machine you have now had any form of maintenance or anyone diagnosing the issues it'd run better even on that system.

If you buy a new system it will solve the issue of the programs running slowly now , but if that system is also left with no maintenance for several years you'll be right back where you started.

Well I doubt that it'll get to that point again since I'll definitely keep an eye on the trash building up in the computer. Thank you, though!

Just dusted it out and the CPU is way cooler!
