RTX 3080 fried my PSU ?

Paragon_X

Hey everyone,

I have a Seasonic Focus plus gold 650W. Which I believe in the PSU tier list marks it as having issues with high end Ampere GPUs (it isnt clear if it is only referring to the Focus Line or the focus plus). So the PC was working fine while playing Cyberpunk and suddenly froze. When i tried to boot it up it didnt do anything i could hear strong clicking sound from the PSU when i booted it. I replaced the card with a 3060 ti and it booted normally but didnt put any load to it.

I have already ordered another PSU (Corsair TX850M) just to be on the safe side and hoping my 3080 didnt just die.

What is your take in this ?

Power overdraw.

So most probably is as I suspected the 3080 was too much for this PSU.

Yes, there was a power spike from the RTX 3080 and the PSU wasn't able to handle it.

Some 650 watt power supplies can possibly sustain an RTX 3080, but it's power draw can spike to more than the PSU's can normally handle. Different PSUs might handle the draw differently iirc. Seasonic power supplies can crash because of this most usually. So basically agreeing with @Analog

I am NOT a professional and a lot of the time what I'm saying is based on limited knowledge and experience. I'm going to be incorrect at times.

Seems so, Hopefully the 3080 is healthy, will have to wait until tomorrow to check.

Switched to a corsair TX850M it now booted but I am getting artifacts which means RIP GPU, sending it back for RMA.

That's unfortunate, my friend. I was under the assumption it was mostly the overpower protection being just too sensitive, and just causing it to trip shutdowns on transient spikes with no other negative consequences.

It sounds like what happened in your system was different, though.

I think it was a PSU issue, these sudden crashes and GPU got damaged by those continuous on and offs. I messaged Seasonic to see if they might cover something under warranty.

I have not heard pleasant stories about Seasonic's stance on RMA of late. Which is disappointing.

The FE recommends at least a 750w power supply, and my specific model of 3080 recommends an 850w PSU.

Given you're on a 650w PSU, I am not confident they'd approve an RMA. I'd be weary about mentioning the 3080 to be honest, as I think they'll deny your claim.

Actually the did accept the RMA no questions asked even if the recommended power supply is 750w. So i now have the TX850 M 3080 booted but i got artefacts due to simingly VRAM issues, so i RMA'd that as well. Ended up buying a 3060 ti as it was the only thing i could find in stock.
