Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan threatened to shut down Twitter and other social media platforms after a court ruling on Thursday. Hours later, the government had shut down access to Twitter in most parts of the country.

“We’ll eradicate Twitter. I don’t care what the international community says," Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said today, according to the Hurriyet Daily News. "Everyone will witness the power of the Turkish Republic.”

Erdoğan said recently that Turkey could ban Facebook and YouTube, but the move was later ruled out.

Here's what one Twitter user says showed up for him when he tried to access the site: "This web page can not be used."

Way to go prime Turkey, surely it will make people stop complaining about the government's corruption.

Signatures are stupid.

Well censorship has always been around, just interesting to see how far we haven't come.

At least they are honest about it, unlike the US and their spying and other nonsense. At least they arent brainwashing their people into thinking they are "free".

You don't have to comment on his posts and always hate the US. The government sucks, but it's really not as bad as places like this.

DoubleY is a good friend of mine and I don't appreciate that, or your attitude in general.

Everything you post is about "er mer gerd NSA is watching me" Go take your tinfoil hate back into your cave. If you really watch that much kitty porn, you should be using something like a vpn and not care what kind of an ISP you have.

Why on EARTH do you care that ISP's look at your data? Are you trying to hide something? Everybody keeps circle jerking each other about how ISP's are the worst thing invented.

Why do I care about my privacy? Because I have critical thinking skills. I am able to see how the data that is collected about me can be used to make amazingly accurate predictions about my life.

Yeah, slightly inaccurate statement, seeing as Turkey is not communist.

I wonder if this will turn into another Arab Spring country, even though the cause of the protests was initially the death of a child.

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forgo their use, and by some other means to give us knowledge which we can attain by them. - Galileo Galilei

I know but it is just the beginning and seems like something a communist country would do.

Problem is N. Koreans are freaking fanatics, nothing communist about them except star on the flag and China is state capitalist country, so nothing communist about them either. Even my country wasn't communist. We were socialist state runned by Communist party. It's complicated. :D

In comparison they're totalitarian systems not communist systems.
