Legacy cpu upgrade?

Hi,

I have this old VAIO VGN CR290 laptop with a replaceable mobile cpu. The current cpu is intel core 2 duo mobile T7500 and I have my eyes set on a Intel core 2 duo T9900. I will paste the links. They seem to be quite similar.

T7500=https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/29761/intel-core-2-duo-processor-t7500-4m-cache-2-20-ghz-800-mhz-fsb.html
T9900=https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/39312/intel-core-2-duo-processor-t9900-6m-cache-3-06-ghz-1066-mhz-fsb.html

The only thing I find that maybe the problem is this ‘PBGA479’ and ‘PGA479’.
also, thinking about bios compatibility. 😕
Thanks in advance,

me.

Since the vaio didn't ship with 9000 series core 2 duo's and the t9900 is a lot newer i'd say the chances of it working are close to 0.

Actually it should say mPGA479M, that's pretty long and is shortened. If it is Socket 479 it will fit, forget about the letters. The only thing to worry about is bios support. If the laptop shipped with a more powerful cpu, it should not be an issue but make sure you have the latest bios installed before upgrading. There is a quite significant increase in performance compared to the 7000 series. While not in benchmarks, a more stable framerate in games is to be expected. To un-mount and mount the cpu, you open and close the socket with a small plastic screw that needs to be turned with a screw driver. Be careful not to over do it or you will break the mechanism. Remember that you will need new thermal paste. It is also a good idea to replace the paste on the chipset and clean out the heatsink fins and the fan.

From what I can find, upgrades from Merom to Penryn chips are possible. However, you would be stuck 800MHz FSB Penryn chips., 1066MHz ones will not work. And on top of that, a BIOS update may be required.

The T7500 is either Socket M or Socket P. If it's Socket M, The T9900 definitely will not work.

Manufacturers only list the scenarios they have tested, not necessarily what will be working. Saying that I have upgraded beyond the supported specs many computers but its always a gamble. If its the same socket and TDP it should work so that would be your best guess

I guess I will just but the intel core 2 duo T7800, since it has 800mhz bus frequency.
