This is what I would get personally.

 

I'd actually probably get the 5900x for the price point. Yes it's excess, but the 5600x seems like the worst with the highest buy-in.

 

It's $300 vs $450 vs $550. 

 

The 5800x has 33% more cores for 50% more money. The 5900x has 100% more cores for 83% more money. 

 

Obviously the number of cores doesn't translate to actual performance gains, but its the principle.

Basically it's up to you. As @HairlessMonkeyBoy said both the 5800X, 5600X and 3600 are going to perform pretty much identically at 4K. There will be a difference at 1440p.

 

Buy what you think is the optimal choice for you. If you think you'd like to invest the remainder of your money elsewhere, then go for the lower option. If you don't care buy a 5800X or 10850K

Minimums will be better on the 5k series vs. the 3k series in most games. Especially the CPU heavy ones.

Would have said this myself, but it's outside OP's stated budget. The 5600X and 5900X are both pretty strong at their respective price points. The 5800X not as much since it doesn't deliver enough over the 5600X, and the 5900X is so close in price.

I actually managed to get my hands on a brand new 5900X here in Slovenia for ~600EUR.

 

Upgrading from X79 (have had it for 9 years; 3930K) and going from 6 cores to 8 or 6 again, is just a complete no-go for me, personally (I know they're waaaay better, but still).

 

Just waiting on the god damn 3080 Ti launch, if that ever happens

In my case it would be a 6 core to an 8 core with AMD or a 10 core with Intel

I have been on a 6/12 core for the past 3 years. Before that was a 4/4. So basically doubling up.

 

So my next upgrade I want to double up also.

Nope. The 5800X has fewer cores, but they are much stronger cores.

It can handle a 5950X maxed out, so a 5800X will be no sweat.
