Are AMD Desktop APU's Dead?

well you already have your shoebox sized case with the Core V1 and yet you are still opting for an APU when you literally have up to 280-300mm clearance of gpu space (depending if you use the 200mm fan or not) like I said, your problem right now is that you are opting for an APU when you literally can fit a full system in a shoebox build... thermals are not an issue because of the sheer amount of modern coolers available in the market that fits in the Core V1 (pretty sure you can fit a 240mm AIO in there with no problems as well)

The thermaltake Core VI is not really shoe box sized...  It's basically 1/2 the height and the same width of a pretty beefy tower.

if you've been into buying shoes for a while, you'd be surprised why I labeled the Core V1 as still a shoebox build... it's only 22.68L after all... still, the point stands that you should forgo using an APU... with that much space to work with, it would be a mistake to not maximize the potential of that case, especially because that's one of the few mini-ITX cases of that era that had a really good foresight to focus on as much airflow as possible for that case...

Edit: also, if the CoolerMaster NR200 can fit top of the line specs and still maintain a reasonable thermal performance at just 18Liters , then your Core V1 can definitely do the same if not do even better...

Maybe. .... maybe.

My ideal situation with this thing would be using it to game in a windows VM while crunching numbers/running a research simulation.   The thing is  while an NVIDIA GPU in an enclosure can do the number crunching (and might as well since I have the enclosure already).

Here's the thing though An NVIDIA GPU in an enclosure in Linux will not be used for video output by the NVIDIA driver.   So I could use the APU for graphics in Linux, and the EGPU to run the CUDA code.

Meanwhile I am waiting hours and hours and hours for that to run... I can be playing say GTA V online in a Windows VM on an internal slotted GPU.

Of course what might but the kibosh on this is... finding more than one recent GPU hat supports Tensor operations.

Ironically enough, there is an option to get an 8-core APU: it's called the Ryzen 7 4700G and Ryzen 7 PRO 4750G. Be warned that since they're OEM chips, they cost a pretty penny (around the $400 mark) when you do find them.

But really, the thing is with APUs is that they've always been tailored for budget gaming. Predominately, AMD's APU lineup has never been particularly intended for high-end machines, although there's certainly NUCs and shit that have some good kick to them.

Yah if they ever go for sale as a consumer chip I'd hella love one for a media pc, and file server not having to worry about discrete gpus can also be a blessing especially when you can't buy one.

Been thinking over this very issue today.  I need a computer that can do certain task.  Ideally I would have one system with linux as a host and Windows as a guest....with access to hardware GPU acceleration by some means or the other.  Maybe running Cubes OS for security and baked in virtualization. The cheapest way would be ... to build a whole new computer.  The parts that it would make sense to go to for a task like that ... don't really exist.

Those parts a pair of GPU's for running CUDA/OpenCL code and also gaming at the same time can't be bought.  Scalpers are buying it all up and asking for ammounts only a fool would pay.  Miners as well.  Even a 1050 is overpriced now!

So a CPU + IGP or an APU that are good enough for 1080P or 1440P gaming are all anyone can get.    Heck go to Microcenter near me and the only Nvidia GPU's on the shelf are the GT series.  Maybe a 2060 and a Quadro RTX card.

Getting a good APU for a build would mean being able to endure the draught if you have nothing else.
